Oleguer was RB and Thuram played too little (most of my memories is him playing LB but I could be wrong).

If I were to choose I'd take some young guy who wouldn't mind tearing his ass and pushing his limits for our shirt, someone like Puyi or Masche, I wouldn't really care about his preferred foot, nor height, as long as he fights for the team.

That system of Pique (more static, tall composed CB) and a bit shorter machine-like partner has worked very well for as so far.

And he's right.

I don't see any talented young forward coming here for the next 2 or 3 seasons (and hopefully longer) while MSN are still on their best. They all want to play and know they won't get many opportunities behind MSN. And it would be also crazy to pay 40M for someone like Sane or 80M and more in Dybala's case for a bench player. So our options are older players like Nolito (Lucho loves him and I think he'll get him in summer) or maybe Jonathan Soriano as a backup for Suarez (at the same time let Munir on loan or buy-back for 2 seasons and see how he develops; I still believe in him, but he needs to play and he won't get enough minutes here; if he stays he'll turn into a new Bojan with broken confidence). Also get back Denis Suarez (he can play midfield and LW, maybe also RW) and maybe Halilović for a preseason to see what he can do. But right now I don't think he's good enough and would prefer another loan for him, possibly to a better team than Sporting. Villarreal would be a perfect fit for him, I think.

As for Verratti, maybe in 2 or 3 seasons, when Iniesta will likely get a Xavi role from last season and Rakitic and Arda will also be over 30, but for now we are well covered in midfield and also have some good talents like Samper (he needs a loan to La Liga side next season), Kaptoum and Alena coming through La Masia.

Even after 6 years, he is - just goes to show how versatile and hard working he is. But it's far from ideal not to mention he isn't likely to continue for much longer.

Mascherano is not simply a contingency plan. He's been a leader on the pitch, an organiser at the back, and a key member of a squad that has won it all. To label him as merely a fail-safe is to do him a disservice.

Puyol can never be compared to Marquinhos

Any player can be compared to any other in a multitude of ways. In this case we're talking about dismissing a player as less than ideal solely because of which foot he favours. For more than a decade now we have had incredible success with CB pairings of similarly footed players (Puyol/Marquez, Pique/Puyol, Pique/Masche). Marquinhos is right-footed, but he has played as both an LCB and RCB, and it would be no impediment to him being successful with us. Now some may dismiss him as a signing due to his inexperience, or lack of height, or PSG having no reason to sell, but to dismiss him due to thinking we need a lefty and a righty at the back would be a mistake.

As a central defender, he was brought in as a stop gap - just happened to last 6 seasons. I said nothing about his leadership, shouldn't confuse the two

Few, like Puyol, are adept at playing multiple positions and having done so at Barcelona. Marquinhos has proven nothing, in any position at any club for any measure of time.

What? Both were primary CBs for us . Oleguer played RB only in 2005-2006 and even during that season he was used a lot as CB when someone needed rest
I don't really remember Thuram at LB ,he was a RB (considered one of the best in his generation at that position) but converted to CB couple of years b4 joining us and that was his position here .he started 23 Liga games in 2006-2007 and that is why I said "to lesser extent"

You said "fail safe", not "stop gap". You shouldn't confuse the two. And speculation about why a player was signed says nothing about the role that that player actually fulfilled during his time at a club.

LCB and RCB scarcely qualify as multiple positions, and many CBs can play both. Marquinhos has proven a great many things, not the least of which being that he could change clubs and continents as a teenager, and secure a starting place in a club the size of Roma, in a position that usually requires much more experience to master.

Xavi says that Dybala and Veratti have Barça DNA.

And he sees them as hot prospects because they would fit in the squad well, even though right now the squad doesn't need strengthening.

Also he thinks Barça will win at least to trophies this season, as it is in good hands.
