Basketball/NBA

What is lil bro on about?
Likely talking about how short each session/quarter is, how many breaks there are, so many commercials, all the glitzy stuff around them. That does take away from them somewhat and there are a lot of people who want to 'Americanise' football for the even greater financial gain, given the sport's vast popularity.

Basketball and hockey are still sports that look interesting to me, though. And I think I'd like NFL if I ever gave it a proper chance. I can't imagine ever liking baseball.

Something that could work well from American sports in football is the stop clock. Two halves of 30 mins each would be a radical thing in football, bigger even than VAR. But it might eradicate a lot of time-wasting and cheating, and would guarantee a full 60 minutes of actual playing time. Some games are down in the early 50s right now.

You do realize football fans been asking for an American system, to eliminate the extra time system we have.
Stop it

82 game season in a league with 30 teams in it is ridiculous. Regular season games are getting more and more pointless. Once the standings are established it's just defensiveless running... But yeah, capitalism. More games, more money.

It's been 82 games since 1967/68 season. It's a tradition and even more important from individual and team record perspective. Most wins in a regular season and stuff like that. I don't think they will touch the number of games, even with the rumoured expansion with new Las Vegas franchise and return of Seattle SuperSonics, now that a new TV deal is in place.

P.S. - would be great to see Kevin Durant retire back where he started. Westbrook as well, although he got drafted by the Sonics, the team relocated a week later.

True, they won't touch the number of matches but mostly because of money even though the records and their statistics mean a lot to Americans. It's seems retarded to me because that ruins the whole season, it's just to much matches and they don't matter. It's also to much to follow for fans, that's why most just watch highlights or follow results.

They have a perfect solution in front of them, just play home and away with everybody like in every normal sport. With expansion it gets to 60 matches, perfect but it 22 less matches and every match brings money so it won't happen. Sporting reasons are less important to Americans.

I also hope the Sonics return but without those two has beens.

On Westbrook I agree. Tons of bricks. His decline is undeniable, but overall is still considered a good player. Durant at 36 is having a great season so far, leading Phoenix Suns player. He's expressed a few times the idea of re-joining Seattle on their return to NBA. 2026/27 season is the earliest proposition. Obviously they are going to suck like Charlotte Bobcast for a while. Meanwhile I don't think anyone of Westbrook & Durant calibre will retire soon, I mean LeBron and Chris Paul are still around after 20 seasons in the league and are 4-5 years older than them.

Seattle SuperSonics is no-brainer. I can tell just by playing a NBA 2K video game and Sonics are the most popular download in a fantasy League mode. The obstacle was the tiny arena at first, then city council's reluctance to invest in a rebuild of the arena. Now that all is in the past, they need to find the rich guy to own the team. Steve Ballmer tried a couple of times in the past to save/return the team to Seattle, but now he owns the Clippers.

Well yeah it's true that it would be cool to have one of the last old Sonics with the new Sonics if they really happen. Hope they do, it would make sense.

I suspect the Vegas franchise will be Lebron's.

Adam Silver said that the NBA is investigating the trend of increased 3PA league-wide, and that they are taking criticisms of offenses being too similar ‘seriously’. Teams are averaging 37.5 three point attempts a game this season, up from 15.8 in 2004, and 22.4 in 2014.
I mean what you gonna do? Ban three pointers? -1 point for every missed shot?

Midrange shooting is extint.

Alter defensive rules, apply it like FIBA (don't allow moving screens, bring back hand check, stop foul batting etc) and maybe get rid of corner 3
NBA rules was made having the awful Spurs/Pistons era that had one of the ugliest basketball back then. They wanted to make things easier for offense.
The thing is, under Silover it never stopped or adjusted, and the NBA is more talented than ever (normally due to better scouts, international talents, training etc) and data forcing teams to take only certain shots.

NBA as a product never tried to adjust to that despite complaints from everyone that the product is hurting.

Probably because NBA is making their highest ever revenues, however I feel that will hurt the product in the long run.

I was more of joking in my previous comment.

- there were adjustments made on foul baiting few seasons ago. That's why we don't hear much of James Harden statwise and such foul rates are significantly down.
- hand check was removed in 1999 to increase scoring, I guess to attract audience since Jordan retired. The rule should be restored, it's essential to the defensive game. Even restored I'm not sure how much of an impact it would have. Almost every team have the same system/playbook on sharing the ball to find the open man at the 3pt line.

Ironically 25 years later the same rule which purpose was to increase TV ratings is backfiring. Since Steph Curry started making headlines the game changed. It seems impossible to discourage current generation from 3pt shooting, it's their bread and butter. There's a whole bunch in college and high school that's adapted it as well.

More than 3pt shooting, there's another issue that is like the elephant in the room - TV ratings are at one of the lowest this season. 48 minute games are 3 hours of gift throwings, excessive time-outs, commercial break time-outs, VAR reviews and dance hall sequences. That's 25% basketball time in a single broadcast. I'm pretty much sure this will not get addressed, because advertising and revenues are much more important than the game.

This sport is done, speaking in terms of NBA. Watching Boston - Philadelphia. 95% of the game is dribbling inside and then passing outside the line for 3pt shots. They should spare everyone the meaningless 15 seconds of pass & dribbling and bring it down to 3pt shooting contest by now.
