Dear fans of the German national team
I just requested for the manager of the national football team to no longer consider nominating me for the national team because I want to retire.
I'd like to express my thanks to the fans, the team, the DFB, the coaches and staff around the German national team.
I got to take the field for my country in 120 caps and experience moments that were indescribably beautiful and successful.
Jogi Löw knew how much the Euros 2016 in France meant to me because I wanted to win this title at all costs, that we could not bring it back to Germany since 1996.
It was not meant to be and I have to accept that.
By winning the World Cup 2014 we achieved something both historically and emotionally that cannot be repeated in my career any more.
Which is why it is right and wise to quit now and wish the team the very best for the qualifiers and the World Cup 2018.
With my retirement I leave the national team which has always been a precious family to me. I hope this connection will persist, one way or another.
Finally, I want to tell our fans: "It was my honor to play for you, thank you for everything I was allowed to experience with you!"
Yours,
Bastian Schweinsteiger
