Having young/almost-prime Maradona and the best version of R9 ever and squandering it away is the only downside of this legendary club - a history of garbage management and mediocre managers (for the club's stature and mystique).

Tbf, in hindsight, R9 didn't last long after that and Maradona had many issues off the pitch and suited Naples perfectly.

True, but in the case of R9, playing in 90s Serie A (highest league level ever) and going up against Maldini, Nesta, Cannavaro, Costacurta, Zanetti and co. on the daily was not good for his knees

He would have lasted way longer in the 90s LL.

Interesting. Surprising to see Olmo not start after his game on the weekend.

Regardless, glad to see a near full strength line-up.

Have to win all of our remaining CL games.

I don't think that makes a difference. Those defenders were legendary because of their reading of the game, man marking and positional sense. Infact, cloggers from midtable clubs are way more aggressive and cynical.

It was R9's explosive style that was very hard on his body. That was the primary reason rather than the Italian league which was more tactical than nasty. Similar to Nadal in Tennis, except Nadal is a freak athlete who still managed to have longevity after recovering from the constant injuries. A guy like Nadal would succeed in almost any sport. Seen him play football? He's an absolute baller and could have gone pro.

Like seeing this. Just not Martin. Why not Fort again, but on LB? Anyway Need to win this, and comfortably, otherwise that big win over Bayern won't be worth anything more than a psychological boost. With so many teams struggling we have a real chance of not only finishing top 8, but actually top 5, if Monaco stays our only defeat. Maybe also a draw vs. Atalanta in the last round, depending on the situation. That would take us to 19 points, which I'm sure will be enough for a top 5, maybe even top 3 finish. Especially if Villa now lose tonight and other smaller teams who started really well also begin to lose points.

After that 2nd half shit show against Asspanyol I'm sure Flick will be on their ass demanding the same intensity for the whole match. And if we hit our groove and don't stop, we'll obliterate them, stadium pressure be damned. Quality on the pitch is what translates and prevails in games like this. Their already two 4 goal defeats again worse (at least attacking wise) teams prove that. I say we'll blitzkrieg the hell out of them, Heil Flick style. 0-4 is my prediction.

I see your point about mid-table butchers. But I saw some videos just the other day about Nesta and Maldini vs. R9 and they definitely roughed him up. Hella physical compared to what you see today.

Ofcourse. Today's Football is really really soft.

But I am sure that the primary reason was his style of play which was insanely explosive, fast and physical. You need to be an absolute genetic freak to sustain that style of play for long. Can't think of any footballer who has sustained such a crazy, explosive style of play for a long time. Look at Adriano for instance. Gareth Bale was explosive too but extremely injury prone and declined early in this era.

Was it someone on here the other day posted a comment saying that Maldini many years later apologised to Maradona for kicking him in the 80s and Diego told him not to worry about it? Lol.
