united fans overrate CR7's time in united. rooney was clearly better than him in their first 3 seasons together and played a very important role along with tevez in CR7's 42 goal haul in 07/08. people make the mistake of taking CR7's goal exploits at madrid and extrapolating them back to his united years. he only scored 119 goals for them over the span of 6 years. that's comparable to neymar's haul at barca over 4 years and neymar definitely isn't a barca legend.

btw to back up aryagorn's point, have a look at the young rooney.

I dont think many considers Ronaldo a United legend, 2-3 great seasons shouldnt be enough to be a legend in a club like United.

Rooney has achieved as much if not more than CR7 for Utd. In fact he helped them win 2 more leagues and reach to another CL final after CR7 left. He even scored a golazo then! Don't let his diminished performance for them in the latter years make you believe that his contribution for Utd's success was any lesser than CR7's!
He definitely has never been best player in the world, sure, but so hasn't Ryan Giggs or Paul Scholes, won't make them any lesser legends than CR7!

If I am not wrong, Rooney blackmailing them & all only happened after SAF has left. Before that he never could/did! Sure that would contribute to losing out on the goodwill, but Utd fans showed the step-motherly love to CR7 even before that and when Rooney was still doing good in their shirt!

Utd fans' infatuation for CR7 is just weird. And so is them considering him to be some kind of their legend too!!
It indeed would be like Barca fans worshipping Neymar in future just because he played for us!

Rooney was nowhere near the top level player for United that Ronaldo was regardless of how long he was there.

You are wrong all the blackmailing happened when Fergie was there and Ronaldo never acted like that.

The United fans worship Ronaldo as he is probably the best player that ever played for them and was a huge part in them winning multiple trophies and another CL.

they dont see it that way. CR played a big role in their second CL, and they only have two. i have not met any United fans, serious or otherwise, who doubt CR is a united legend

Rooney was only really better than Ronaldo in his debut season (2004/05) but that was more due the fact that he was at a more advanced stage of his development than CR who was still very erratic and inconsistent with his decision making and end product. He often held onto the ball too long and over-dribbled (often beating a man but then going back and trying to beat him again). He'd try to pull of the most outrageous tricks in games much to the frustration of Van Nistelrooy at the time. However, once he began mending those weaknesses in his game, he completely eclipsed Rooney. Think it was the second half of the 05/06 season he really took off and became a key member of the United team at the time. By the time the 06/07 season came round (after the '06 WC) he was a different beast and was the primary catalyst to united winning the EPL that season which resulted in him swooping all the major individual awards in England that year ahead of guys like peak drogba, peak gerrard, lampard etc. before finishing 2nd in the Ballon D'or by the end of 2007.
Then came the 07/08 season when he scored the 42 goals and won the EPL + CL with United that saw him crowned as World's best. Don't think Rooney could even clean his boots that season although he was important for United too. But it was Ronaldo who carried them for most of that season at a time he was more than just a glorified goal scored. He was pretty central to everything they did attacking. His level dropped however in the 08/09 season (his final season at the club) but he already had his mind set on Madrid as he was convinced by Alex ferguson to stay an extra year when he was really supposed to leave in 2008. Is say their level was closest this season but Ronaldo was still better and together they won the EPL for a 3rd straight time and made the CL final.

Overall for their time together:

04/05: Rooney > Ronaldo
05/06: Rooney > Ronaldo up until about February 2006.
06/07 Ronaldo >> Rooney
07/08: Ronaldo >>>> Rooney
08/09: Ronaldo > Rooney (closer than previous two seasons) but it was mainly Uniteds defence of Rio/Vidic that carried the team to the title.

Overall, at their best for United Ronaldo was probably miles ahead in terms of ability and peak performance and Rooney knew this so didn't complain when he was being shifted around by Sir Alex towards the end of their time together to accommodate for the Portuguese.

1967–68, 1998–99, 2007–08. They have 3 titles.

Its not even ballon d'ors its the ballon= greatness logic. Im tired of hearing this Messi and Ronaldo are best ever stuff when he is just a great goalscoree compared to the goat. A modern day gerd muller made way bigger than he is.

He's not that great a natural goalscorer (compared to the best like Muller or Puskas). He's got a team full of world class players putting them on a plate for him every game while the standard of defending has got worse and he gets nothing like the level of attention off defenders Messi gets. He misses more chances than anyone else. Muller only needed one chance.

In international football his record is nearer 1 in 2 and that's only because of all the stat padding against the likes of Andorra and Gibraltar farmers.

He's had team mates like Benzema the whole time, or Ozil, who are only there to supply him with chances.

Apparently missed a horde of chances again and was probably crap as usual BUT he does get in scoring positions which itself is an art. The fucker will still score a lot.

He's more Andy Cole than Gerd Muller. Muller didn't miss stacks of good chances a game.

Cole and Ronaldo are both forwards with great movement who played in very attacking and quality sides who created shitloads for them. 15 Penaldos every season helps too.

He is a better player than Muller ever was.

Ronaldo is nothing like Andy Cole.

Saying shit like that just makes some Barca fans seem completely deluded.

He is a better player than Muller but Ritchie has a point, Ronaldo isn't clinical at all, he needs a lot of shots to score a goal.

I didn't say he was a better player, Ronaldo has been a better player.

I said Muller is a better natural goalscorer and finisher than Ronaldo. There's a myth around Ronaldo that he's the best ever goalscorer.

Players like Muller, Puskas, Ian Rush, Jimmy Greaves were unbelievable natural goalscorers. They didn't need stacks of chances and shots to score.

Put Muller up front for 55 games for 90 minutes every season in that Madrid team with all these great players queuing up to tee him up and he takes all the penalties and he'd easily score more than one a game.

IN pure striker/finisher terms Ronaldo is more of an Andy Cole. For most of his career though Ronaldo hasn't been a centre forward.

Ronaldo is one of the greatest goalscorers ever and it is down to his movement off the ball.

Never seen someone who can expose poor defending quicker than he can with movement.

Put the ball in the box ten time and Ronaldo gets on end of it 6/7 times and scores twice that is more effective than a 'clinical' striker that gets on end of one or two and scores once.

Muller is a poacher who did nothing but scores goals in the box, Ronaldo can hurt a team that defends a high line or deep and has a good number of assists as well.

Muller etc are better finishers. Ronaldo is more of an all round threat and likely to score more.

You dont have any stats to compare those players on anyway.

In terms of natural finishers Ronaldo isnt probably even in top ten in world but in terms of most likely to score a goal or two he is probably most likely to do it. Only Messi is is on that level.

That's where the Andy Cole comparison comes in. Cole's movement in the box was brilliant.
