Good for him to get the cash.
He had his glorious career, no need to fight father time now, cashing out like that is the smart decision.

By the way, rumours that their own rival (Hilal) will have a blank cheque in order to sign Messi

Tbf this is his golden chance to pad more goals and get more goalscoring records, especially with Messi getting more and more close to his career total (gap is less than 30).

Gerd Muller is the greatest pure goalscorer in history.

1 WC, 1 Euro, 3 CL in a row

Scored 10 goals at WC 1970, world cup winning goal in 74, double in euro 72 final, and goals in CL finals. Basically, ultra clutch.

68 goals in 62 games for Germany or something crazy. Peak of 85 goals per calendar year, while CR7 never broke 70.

Goes back to something i've said earlier, players nowadays just have way many more fixtures to achieve new records.

Imagine if Muller got to play like 150-200 international games and 150-200 UCL games, and its not due to shorter peak, back then they just had fewer games, thats it.

True. Internationally players reaching with ease 150-200 games like in basketball was unthinkable before.

Lothar Mattheus 150 games in a span of 20 years is still the most impressive record IMO.

Yup, that's why less stock must be placed on cumulative records and more on peak performance level and duration of peak.

My bet is that he won’t even score that many goals over there. His decline will be even more clear in a league of that quality, not to mention that he will decline even more rapidly under the circumstances.

These last 2 years have been brutal to him.

Even on Redcafe, no one considers him on the same level as Messi anymore. Most rate him a whole tier behind Messi now (with Messi, Pele, Maradona being tier 1).

Ultimately, there's a lot of value on winning + aesthetics. You can't have technical abilities like his (elite but not otherworldly) and be considered a football god by non Instagram followers/casuals.

Haaland and Mbappe will face the same issue. They don't have anything special aesthetically about them (Haaland even more so than Mbappe).

For all the Barca and Messi fans out there who went through the dark times of the RM CL 3-peat and Euro 2016 win (where he wasn't even on the pitch)
