Cristiano Ronaldo - v1

You can say that for most superstars though. To be honest I'm getting sick of the Messi Ronaldo comparisons. Its been going on for about 7 years now and its getting old. Fanboys from either side annoy me. Anyone with a brain knows that at peak form Messi is the best anyway.

Everyone keeps up this comparison every week and keep looking for new crappy arguments. Now it's a bad thing to want to win titles and get goal records and its being used against someone? Messi is trying to do the same thing and would also play with injury to get a goal record, it's the point of football.

I don't care about these individual battles and shitty record and comparing personalities. I care about how teams are doing.

What I don't understand is how anyone can hate Ronaldo so much for being selfish while at the same time being OK with Messi conserving himself for the World Cup.

Before you get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with it, I just fail to see how Ronaldo trying to win the CL for his ego is different from Messi trying to win the WC for his ego.
Because Messi doesn't act like a selfish twat. At least try to look happy when your teammates score. That's why I really dislike Ronaldo, and I used to be his biggest fan before I started to watch Messi on a regular basis. Fuck, I even cried like a little girl when Portugal lost to Greece back in 2004.

I loved the young Ronaldo at United. His dribbling was very entertaining back then.

There are 2 reasons I dislike him now.
1- he plays for Madrid.
2- The way he acts. As a male I find it difficult to like someone who cries, bitches and moans as much as he does, especially over such silly things like a team mate not passing it when leading by many goals etc. His antics are similar to that of an adolescent girl.

Great player though, possibly top 10 to ever play the game.

lol. yeah right

It is right. He is a machine. I dislike him for basically the same reasons Kerrybai posted, but there's no way to deny he is one of the greats. Top 20 might be more accurate, but it's not much more than that.

That's fair and I understand that. I'm talking more about how people dislike him for putting his own interests (Pichichi, goal records etc) over the club's yet Messi is doing the same thing now, albeit in a different manner.

I highly disagree with even the "possibly" part. He is an all-time great scorer, yeah. But that's all. To put him in even the top 25 would be a stretch IMO.

Top 10 might be a bit much, but I would say top 20. I mean the essential aim in football is to put the ball into the net, and no one ( bar Messi ) does that better than him. I hear people say Gerd Muller was a goal machine but never made it to top 20 status etc, but in this modern era it is incredible what both he and Messi are doing. He has 36 goals in his last 3 CL seasons. The likes of Henry couldnt hit that much in their entire careers. He's not exactly useless outside of goals too, he provides quite a lot of assists etc.

Regarding the first part we all love Messi so we are going to be biased. Plenty of people have been calling him out though. For me personally I'm not going to jump to conclusions and pretend I know what's up with Messi. Maybe he's lost some motivation for other reasons, He's not the only Barca star underperforming.

I think the essential aim in football is to win the match, it doesn't have to be by scoring a lot of goals. Let's consider the top 20. You would have to put 3 goalies, 5 defenders, 6 midfielders and 6 forwards to have a close-to-fair representation. Do you think Ronaldo is in the top 6 forwards of all-time? Messi, Pele, R9, Di Stefano, Muller, Eusebio are all better forwards than Cristiano IMO (for those I haven't seen I'm looking at their goal records). And that doesn't even take into account the subjective "magic" and aesthetics usually associated with these lists.

Even being in top 50, for example, counts as being an all-time great and Ronaldo is definitely that, absolutely.

Well some people think there goalscoring records are somewhat tainted playing in La Liga, a league not really known for it's defending, let's be honest.

But that's another topic

Have you seen fullbacks in the modern era..

I know it seems like La Liga is comparatively worse at defending than Serie A, for example. Personally speaking, I would agree with that. But when you look at the numbers, it's not very obvious. 2012-13 La Liga has 1091 goals, while 2012-13 Serie A had 1003 goals. So over 380 games, La Liga only had 88 goals more than Serie A. If teams are supposedly better at attacking and worse at defending in La Liga, the numbers would surely be a bit more exaggerated.

Well he was talking about the goalscoring feats in the 'modern era' Serie A is probably the best defensive league still in the world, but it has it's fair share of dross, it is also a million miles away from what it used to be, so i don't find the goalscoring all that impressive if i'm honest, just my opinion. La Liga is also very unbalanced and Ronaldo/Messi esp. Messi's case play in phenomenal teams, built for them to shine to boot.

I'm not so sure about making a fair representation. I think an accurate top 20 would be stacked with forwards and midfielders, it may seem unfair but history tends to remember those who score goals more than those who stop them. Also if we are talking about goal records we have to take into account goals per game for that era. Anything before the 60's has to be taken with a pinch of salt as those attackers playing in leagues averaging 4 plus goals per game. ( or something like that )

Maybe he's not top 20 but I do think most of the footballing world will rank him that high by the time he retires. I wonder how different his conversation would be if he stayed in England.

That's a fair point but I'm not so sure there is any truth to it, la liga 2.82 gpg, epl 2.75, serie a 2.66. I think a more accurate argument is that they both surrounded by superstars. I really do believe Messi would hit insane figure in any league though.

The art of defending has certainly declined.
