Cristiano Ronaldo - v1

I highly disagree with even the "possibly" part. He is an all-time great scorer, yeah. But that's all. To put him in even the top 25 would be a stretch IMO.

Even top 25 is a stretch? Come on. Cules often talk about Messi being the GOAT. GOAT or not, I think most football fans agree that Messi is in the top 5. Yes Messi is a much more complete player who is much more talented than Ronaldo, but how can Messi be in the top 5 while Ronaldo can't even be ranked in the top 25? Measuring a player is not just based on talent; achievement, drive, determination, performance over the whole career etc. should be taken into consideration. Ronaldo certainly is a worse player compared to Messi, but is he that much worse than Messi? Being a huge Messi fanboy (but hasn't lost his perspectives), I would be extremely happy if Messi can match Ronaldo's numbers today when he is 29, just to name one thing.

When you guys say the art of defending has declined, what do you mean? Compared to what ages? Is it because in contemporary/modern games referees give more protections to the offensive forwards and strikers or what?

The quality of defenders has declined. The Maldini's and Cafu's of football are becoming a rare commodity. It's hard to pint point the reason for this but I think football has become a pure money business centered around buying the best attacking players. There are still some great defenders out there but the top teams are spending their money on attacking options and neglecting defence. For example a player like Seamus Coleman (yes im biased ) should be attracting big money offers from the top clubs but it just doesn't happen as often for defenders now. With full backs the first thing teams look at is how they attack as opposed to how good they are in defence. Just my opinion anyway, probably 99% s***

i think people are tad bit spoilt by the defenders of the 90's. there's truth to teams chasing attackin options now, there's just no profit in defenders.
but don't worry. ScouseCafu is here to bring it all back.

Top 10 might be a bit much, but I would say top 20. I mean the essential aim in football is to put the ball into the net, and no one ( bar Messi ) does that better than him. I hear people say Gerd Muller was a goal machine but never made it to top 20 status etc, but in this modern era it is incredible what both he and Messi are doing. He has 36 goals in his last 3 CL seasons. The likes of Henry couldnt hit that much in their entire careers. He's not exactly useless outside of goals too, he provides quite a lot of assists etc.

Regarding the first part we all love Messi so we are going to be biased. Plenty of people have been calling him out though. For me personally I'm not going to jump to conclusions and pretend I know what's up with Messi. Maybe he's lost some motivation for other reasons, He's not the only Barca star underperforming.

Both Ronaldo and Gerd Müller are top 20 all time imo, Messi top 3.

That was a nice gesture by Ronaldo. Anyone have more information on that exchange?

"One of the great images of the match was that of Cristiano Ronaldo giving Leo Messi a conciliatory hug at the end of the game. Messi looked so down at heart at the end of the Copa del Rey final that Cristiano did his best to make the Argentine feel a little better" [marca].
