Cristiano Ronaldo - v1

Ronaldo played while not being 100% fit. Considering that, he's had his impact on the win by providing a great pass for the only goal of the match. And I say that with no particular love for Cristiano Ronaldo.

And yes, for a Barca fan is perfectly reasonable to say Ronaldo has not been better than Messi this season. But judging for a more objective perspective, he has the better numbers and his team has done better than Barcelona. What arguments could you give for Messi > Ronaldo this season? Not a single strong one.

Messi provided two great chances for his team vs AM yet according to you Messi was poor while Ronaldo wasn't?

Messi and Ronaldo have had pretty much identical seasons. Your argument is based on numbers where Ronaldo only slightly edges Messi. Goals per game ratio favours Ronaldo but if we take into account minutes played then things are much closer.

I Believe Messi has a goal every 82 and 72 minutes in league and CL while Ronaldo has goals every 84 and 55. The goal tally is 39-45 with 13 assists each. Come the end of the season the stats might be even closer. For the record Messi had a far better first leg vs AM then Ronaldo did vs Bayern last night.

The fact that Messi has been almsot toe to toe after a 2 month absence makes it very reasonable to suggest Ronaldo has not been the better player this season.

Not a fair comparation since Real had like 25-30% of the ball against Bayern and Barca had 70-75% of the ball against Atletico. Ronaldo had few moments on the ball, and still managed to make a difference.

And Messi faced a brick wall while Ronaldo played a routine pass in behind Rafihna... good argument there.

Ronaldo has missed as many games as Messi has, due to that suspension vs Bilbao or the recent injury. They both have played 42 games so far this season. Ronaldo leads the goals and usually the goals are most important. His team also has done better than Barcelona this season.

And against Atletico, Ronaldo has performed a lot better than Messi, he has scored 3 goals on Calderon this season, so don't bring Simeone's team into this, because RM and CR were a lot more efficient against them than Barca with Messi have been this season.

Since they both have played 42 games, I won't put that much importance on Messi's injury.

So, if Messi is behind Ronaldo -- slightly in Spain and clearly in Europe -- and if Barcelona has had a worse season than Madrid, give me ONE argument for Messi > Ronaldo.

Only In Europe has Ronaldo bettered Messi in terms of goals per minutes played and in Europe Messi missed 3 games due to injury. With 4 games to go in the league they could still end up with identical stats. The difference in stats is far too small to consider Ronaldo better than Messi considering Messi overcame a far more serious injury.

Messi outshone Ronaldo in the 4-3 win and Madrid and was instrumental in knocking out City while Ronaldo and Madrid played against cannon fodder which padded his stats.

Ronaldo ans his wonderful side have a laughable amount of points vs the top 5 in La Liga this season. If he delivers the league title or CL then I will hands down admit he has been better, but up to this point I don't believe there is a difference between the two.

Yea, like Messi has delievered us any titles this season, besides a crappy Supercopa. At least Ronaldo took out Atletico in Copa del Rey. As it stands RM's season has been better than ours. Better in Copa, better in CL, better in La Liga too probably. So, if there is anyone who must prove something, that's Messi in the WC or the next start of the season. Let's just agree to disagree on this one.

Coentrao's pass was better and more difficult.

Ronaldo missed a big 1vs 1 chance that could have ended the draw.

Other than that , he was invisible.

But judging for a more objective perspective his team has done better than Barcelona.

 what does his team has to do with this argument ?

They won the spanish cup without Ronaldo in the field . Also out of all the games Ronaldo hasn't played , they only lost once. They pretty much trashed every opponent they had without Ronaldo. Even against Galatasaray ( who draw against Chelsea ) , they won with 4-1 in 10 men , without Ronaldo.

On stats. That's the most solid argument there is.

And yes , judging a player for it's numbers is the most wisest thing to do , good job champ.

That's why Ozil is better than Zidane and Fabregas than Iniesta.

Also Ronaldo is currently the Ballon d'Or winner. That should give us a hint that the perception on who's better AT THE MOMENT .

How ironic that you talk about perception and the Ballon d'or.

The Ballon d'or ...whose last winner had only 3 points 3 months earlier at the Best player in Europe award , who was in great form for 1 month while Messi was injured , who scored 3 goals against Sweden against an amateur deffence and Blatter reopening the votes just after that game. With Ronaldo winning by only 3-4 % of votes with a huge amount of votes coming thanks to Blatter reopening the votes.

Yep , great perception.

What arguments could you give for Messi > Ronaldo this season? Not a single strong one.

Well let's see...

Messi had a better start of a season untill he had his hamstring injury. He was better than Ronaldo , who was pretty much invisible in the first Clasico , and better than Ronaldo was against Atletico , in their 1-0 loss. In the biggest games of the first part of the season , Ronaldo was a flop.

After Messi returned from that injury it was clear that it still bothered him just to have his muscle torn a few games later. With Messi injured , Ronaldo had a blast in those 2 months.

After Messi returned from injury untill this point , he has 25 goals and 11 assists

In the same time Ronaldo has scored 18 goals and 7 assists.

Messi was the best player against Madrid , having scored 3 and assisted 1 while in the same game Ronaldo was only seen when he was fouled outside the box and got a penalty.

Messi scored 2 goals in the double against City.

The only important game in which Messi was bad was against Atletico , but he wasn't as bad as Ronaldo was yesterday or in Ronaldo's last league game against Atletico.

Ronaldo has missed as many games as Messi has, due to that suspension vs Bilbao or the recent injury.

Yeah right , give me a break.

Messi has 3470 minutes in all competitions while Ronaldo has 4010 minutes in all competitions . That's a difference of 540 minutes , meaning 6 games.

Sure , Ronaldo was way better then Messi

What stats exactly? Ronaldo has more goals this season? Sure, Messi was out for two months! What else?

And the fact Ronaldo is the current BD winner doesn't prove anything. You can be crowned the best player in the world and has a bad spell/week/month right after that. Just look at Messi. He was really good in January, Februrary and March, but not so much in April. Since Messi returned from injury in January, he has been better than Ronaldo.

One thing Ronaldo is definitely better than Messi is his work rate. Yesterday against Bayern, despite not being 100% fit, he still ran 8.1k, compared to Messi's pathetic 6.8k against Atletico.

How about not comparing Leo and Ronaldo every single time? It's annoying. Talk about his performance. Say it's good, shit or whatever but the game yesterday had nothing to do with Messi.

But it is more than goals. Assists, key passes, dribbles won etc. all in which Messi edges Ronaldo.

When Messi is bad, he is really quiet and ended up not doing anything. When Ronaldo is bad, he usually still ends up scoring some easy goals, that I will give it to you.

Plus, why are we talking about team performance and result when we are measuring individual performances? We have been really bad the second half of this season, what does that have to do with saying Ronaldo has been better than Messi?

I think you are missing the point here, you have changed the topic from who is doing better to which team is doing better. Football is an 11vs11 game, we have a useless keeper and defence as well as several tactical problems ( which Messi is part of, but not completely responsible for ). If Ronaldo plays the deciding role in the remaining comps then credit to him he's been better, but being part of a trophy winning team doesn't necessarily mean he's had a better season.

I think we pretty much made it clear that you think Messi has had a better season than Ronaldo while I think the opposite. You said that if Ronaldo wins either La Liga or CL with Real you'll admit he was better this season. But Messi can't win with Barca neither of the two. So... if we bring their teams into this, Ronaldo wins it. And even if we don't Ronaldo has had a slightly better season in my eyes.
