Ronaldo (Real Madrid): "Messi chants? Why would I talk about that... They should be happy to watch Real Madrid and the stars play here."

 poor guy ...he will never admit it, but his inferiority complex towards messi grows heavier and bigger each day.

No reason to talk about it, focus on the players on the pitch instead. Seems like an ok answer, really.

I probably shouldn't have been surprised but i truly was taken back by his antics last night. To dive as the Ballon Dor winner playing for the reigning champions against a Bulgarian team, then obnoxiously run off to celebrate your second penalty attempt, then to make such a point of your goal tally with hand gestures, and then to do that sickening calm down celebration to this small teams fans that you just conned your way into scoring against. It was so pathetic. I was a fool to think he was getting any classier with age.

I too felt that his answer was OK, but the underlying fact is the startling contrast of how neutral fans see the two:

Those fans chanting "Messi ~ Messi" are not necessarily Messi or Barca fans. They either (1) don't like Ronaldo and can't stand what he does or (2) they want to distract him ( probably the majority of them) so they chant Messi's name to torment him. But you don't see Messi getting any Cristiano Ronaldo chants from ours or Argentina's opposing fans. Probably because they know (1) Messi is better than Ronaldo and (2) Messi simply just doesn't care about being compared with Ronaldo so it won't get to him.

in all honesty, i think privately ronaldo doesn't give a damn about messi, because in his mind, he is the best (or most complete, or whichever yard stick he uses) player and that's good enough for him.

the thing is that those with real self confidence don't need the approval of others, because they judge themselves (often very harshly) and once they approve that's all they need.

And that's a trait that both messi and ronaldo share. the "rivalry" is between the fans of the two and stoked by the media because polarizing stuff like that sells best.

I hope he loses Bulgaria's votes.

Well-said. The last part is the funniest.

The only place I can remember where the fans chanted Cristiano's name to Messi was in Portugal, but that's self-explanatory.

Ronaldo might win both ballon'dor and fallon'd floor in the same year, impressive. Strong competition in both categories, so nothing is decided yet. Fortunately(?) Ashley Young isnt playing much, so other players have a chance.

I think they know Messi wouldn't give a shit. They know Messi is the better player too, you wouldn't chant Joe Frazier to Ali.
