Ronaldo was poor in the world cup, there is no denying that. He did fail against Ghana, he was poor against USA, but he did save them a point in the dying minutes. The Germany game i dont see what he could have done, really, one men down against arguably the best team, a very difficult task. Argentina did really well considering the players they had. I think Portugal should have secured 2nd place after Germany, considering their players. Still, i think there is a significant squad difference between these two teams. With Coentraos early injury, Pepe, Ronaldo and perhaps Moutinho would be the only players who would secure a place in Argentinas first 11.
I think Mascherano was the best player overall, but thats my opinion. Messi had a great impact in the group stages, but in the last few knockout rounds, i felt he didnt do so much. Mascherano really put in a shift in the last rounds. Anyway, thats my opinion. Messi didnt have much help in attack, he did well in creating and scoring all things considered. But i felt, after the group stages, Argentinas biggest strength was their defence and gk, they hardly let the opponents get big goal scoring chances.
Don't agree. Argentina's defence was leaking chances after chances in the group stage against the lieks of Iran, Bosnia and Nigeria. That's how "good" their defense was, while at the same time creating almost no chance, that's how good their creativity was.
And again, before the semifinal, no one even mentioned Mascherano once! Why do you think that is? Because until that point, at best, he was having an average WC. What happend was that he had a great semifinal, including a match saving block, and then alot of people who didn't want to give Messi the credit that he deserves invented this whole BS about Mascherano being Argentina's best player. When the truth is that Mascherano wasn't even close to being as good/important as Messi at this WC. The only one from Argentina who was, was the goalkeeper Romero..
