Daniel Alves

Unless we drastically increase our offer immediately, which is extremely unlikely, especially after signing a replacement, he won't be renewed. That's not daft at all.

Fact of the matter is that there's still a chance he'll be here next season. How big a chance? Neither you nor I has any inkling of that, but it's obviously still there.

No. The signing of Aleix Vidal is not related to whether Alves renews or not. If he renews then I guess Montoya and Douglas will be sold/loaned so that Alves and Vidal are our RBs next season.

Seems overly optimistic, to me. Since his double whammy of press conferences from both himself and his agent there hasn't been any indication that he has any intention of renewing, and instead of the club making it known they desire to reach an agreement with him they've gone and signed a replacement. Dani signing a new contract would be a shocker.

You think we would have still signed Vidal if Alves had renewed when we initially offered him a new contract?

I seriously don't consider Douglas to even be an option when discussing the RB position. Whether he goes or not, he was never going to have any role at Barca.

And what a pair that would be.

I can easily see Dani renewing and sharing game time with Vidal next season, so no, it wouldn't be a shocker. What would be a shocker would be a player who's living the perfect life at a club he loves, surrounded by players he seems to best of buddies with, deciding to turn his back to all that.
As DonAK, I don't think his transfer is related to Dani leaving. Lucho obviously doesn't rate Douglas and Montoya, and could want a strong duo to compete for the spot. Who knows what'll happen to Adriano too this window?

I'd take Alves - Vidal (RB), Pique - Mascherano - Bartra - Vermaelen (CB), Alba - Mathieu (LB). That looks great IMO. Defense all set.

Agreed. That's what I expect and hope we'll see next season. Perhaps with Adriano staying put until January.

Looks very solid, except for Mathieu at LB. I'd rather we stick with Adriano or promote Grimaldo as Alba's backup. Mathieu is a far better player when played at CB, imo, and at the moment he's our #3 CB. That kind of makes the CB position crowded a bit, but all that means is more piss raining down on Bartra, who has shown he doesn't really care.

Obviously Vidal is being signed because Alves is leaving. You would think that much is clear. His contract is ending, he rejected our final offer, and we have a transfer ban, so no players with ongoing contract will be allowed to leave. Doesn't take much to put 2 and 2 together. Vidal is a direct replacement for Alves.

That makes no sense. The rumors started exactly at the same time Alves announced that he most likely won't be renewing. And the club themselves said that no player will be allowed to leave, which really makes sense. Besides, Alves staying and Vidal arriving, with Montoya/Douglas leaving, would only mean that we need to buy another RB when Alves leaves/retires, whereas if he replaces him, we only have young RBs in the team and are set for the next several years.

No. The rumours about signing a RB started a good few months ago, when Darmian, Aleix Vidal, Danilo etc were named as options. A RB was gonna be signed in summer regardless of whether Alves stayed or not.

It's obvious that Lucho doesn't rate Montoya and no one rates Douglas. So the plan was probably to sign a RB and renew Alves, and then sell or loan Montoya and Douglas.
