He has potential due to his technical skill, but it'll take a lot of individual work and maturation for him to become a reliable member of the squad. Needless to say, it'd take an even more immense level of individual growth for him to ever become a worthy starter in the midfield. The kind of growth that I don't believe he can realistically make, though crazier things have probably happened in football.

An interesting question.
I looked back and it seems that we are the best in terms of midfielders when we play with La Masia or Spanish guys.
Our last xx central midfielders:
1. Andre Gomes, fail
2. Denis Suarez, fail
3. Arda, mostly fail
4. Rakitic, ok to good
5. Fabregas, average
6. Keita, ok for a sub
7. Van Bommel, average
8. DECO, awesome
9. Riquelme, fail
10. Fabio Rochemback, fail
11. Menieta, fail
12. Gerard Lopez, not good enough
13. Petit, fail
14. Litmanen, fail
15. Ronald De Boer, fail
16. COCU, good
17. LUCHO, good
So, in the last 20 years, we had tons of failed transfers of (central midfielders).
But players who were good, were domestic guys like: Pep, Lucho, Xavi, Iniesta.
Good transfers in the last 20 years were Lucho, Cocu, Deco and Rakitic.
This raises huge question marks over future expensive transfers like Bernardo Silva, Coutinho, Ozil, Pogba and similar.
Verratti would probably clicked well. But all other players (knowing our history), it is very questionable.
But still, Alena, Rafinha and similar guys seem like better fits than 40-50 M guys like Gomes and Arda, that's sure.

Valencia really took us for a ride. Mendieta, Gerard, Gomes..
In the past we used to say: we should never again buy a player from Arsenal.
Now we should say: we should never again buy a player from Arsenal and Valencia.

Ok, Arsenal is still unbeatable and has the highest ratio of fails vs good transfers, but Valencia is surely a No2 on that list.

Van bommel did his thing bbz.. when xavi hurt his acl he really stepped up and took the respobsability in midfield.

Mathieu was a good signing,at least a very debatable player,Mendieta came on loan from Lazio,let's not put that on Valencia. You move Mathieu to the good list and you have reasonable purchases from them,specially since the start of new Barca era
Oh,and you forgot Paco
I honestly liked Overmars here,thought he was underrated player in a club that was disastrous back then and really no one that was purchased succeeded that time. Only the 25 or younger players(when Laporta elected and Rijkaard joined) from our youth system was still their when we started winning.
I also think you have to look at each case,you can't really blame the club on Hleb for example,he himself admitted he had personal issue,rejected everything Pep asked him to do,refused to learn Spanish,those players have life outside of football and it could in some cases be the reason to destroy or boost their careers. No way that the club was able to know what is gonna happen in his personal life. Song was brought to be something he isn't,guy wasn't made for 4-3-3 as he was sort of a different type of CM and he was brought to play DM & CB (and honestly I think he wasn't that bad as DM),or Vermaelen who didn't pass medical and Zubi still made the deal.
Again all those deals if happened from other clubs would have been bad,it isn't about choosing players from certain clubs but choosing right players
This arguments works both ways,the club was also on fault to focus on Arsenal players during Zubi time for instance

I liked Van Bommel, but fans in general didn't like him too much since he played way different than Barca's DNA style.
We had let him go after only 1 season.
We had Xavi, Deco, young Iniesta and Van Bommel and only 2 places available.
Oh, Paco.
I'll add him now.
Mathieu wasn't bad, but half of our forum whined for years that he is too old, that he wasn't worth money, that he is too often bad even as a Cb etc.
He was ok-ish to me.

Davids was great. We had a terrible start to season and then he came in January and Barca found their balance and exploded.
Shame he was stupid and refused to stay.

He wanted to stay, we offered one year he wanted 2 or 3 years i reckon .. Shame we didnt give the man a nice contract, those 6 mounths he played with us were simply magical .. Davids is a magical player ..
