Main reason was that Payet's wages at Marseille were to go down because the club didn't qualify for CL, as his contract stipulated. Payet told the club he would not accept these wages which he had agreed to a year before. He bitched after he left.

Well, finally one more proof, EPL is just a money league, players don't care of prestige or other stuff except for TOP PLAYERS and Payet isn't in this category.. Now Ligue 1 attracts investors (Chinese coming to 2 new clubs), and great academies, we will see the difference in the next 3/4 years in Champions League.
