I don't know why we are going after somebody who will be cup tied, if we are going to sign him though, we'd better hurry up and do so.
Because it's an investment in the future. Puyol can't be on the highest level forever., and Chigrinsky is what.. 22?
Personally, I think Pique-Chigrinsky partnership would be just awesome!
We wouldn't be so vunerable on defending set pieces from freekicks and corner kicks.
The point of getting a central defender is this:
* Gives us 4 good central defenders for the 2 positions.
* Makes Puyol available as backup for Alves when needed. (Puyol is said to be refusing to sign a 2 year extension until he figures out what his position in the squad is going to be. But he is safe since Pep says he is still counting on him. He said Puyol can forget about leaving cuz hes a great player and he can play in any position in the defence and still shine. But Puyol seems to be a bit worried. I would be too, hes getting older.)
* Makes it possible for Marquez and Pique to play DM when needed, and moving Yaya to the ACM position when needed where we can use Yaya's offensive qualities (shooting, dribbling, passing, strength in the box).
* A central defender will improve our threat in the air on corners and free kicks (we get 15 corners every game but we never score on them!) and makes us better at defending set pieces. Pep has said that he wants the new player to be good in the air, as we have a big weakness there.
* With the new central defender giving Pique and Marquez the option of playing in the DM position, we suddenly have and abundance of talent at the 2 CM positions:
CMs: Xavi, Keita, Thiago, Yaya, Iniesta, Jonathan dos Santos.
6 good players for 2 positions. And they have different characteristics. This means Iniesta can very often play on the wings. If we get a central defender, it means a new midfielder is not needed at all.
