Fair enough Fergus. It's not really a disservice to him - he's very good for Villa, he's just incredible level for Argentina. If he replicated his form for Argentina for Villa he'd be the best goalkeeper in the world in my opinion.To be fair it was his Villa form that got him the call initially.
He was that good that I remember arguing with someone in the Stegen thread that he would help Messi win his first international trophy and so it proved.
Last year he was fantastic, of course he made mistakes as any keeper does but was generally brilliant.
First several games of this season he’s been shit. Although the second half of yesterday’s game, he did have his best 45 of the season.
But yeah, MAYBE Don overegged the pudding a bit with saying 'nowhere near as good' - good point too that his Villa form is what got him to Argentina No.1 in the first place.
He's 32 now I believe so he still has maybe 5 or 6 years left hopefully. Goalkeepers can definitely go til 37 or 38.
