International stats are a joke because they now include friendlies and minnow competitions (qualifications for example) into your overall stats. Neymar the 3rd greatest Brazilian player of all time because of his goals. Messi has disappointed year after year for Argentina except for maybe one tournament in his entire career, yet he's a top goalscorer. Ronaldo has barely scored in all of his serious (Euros/World Cup) International competitions for Portugal and yet he's their top scorer. International breaks are useful for stat padding, I don't take them seriously and neither should anyone else.

Its not really that the opposition is any worse than in the past, always been plenty of cannon fodder, its just that there are so many more games now than in the past.
Some of the legends of the past had better goal ratios, but they didnt play 150+ matches for their NT.
