Ernesto Valverde - V1

Just curious: what's the local opinion of Valverde? And if, somehow, we do manage to blow our lead, do you think he will be sacked?

I'm interested in what he will do against Malaga, regardless of the result against Atleti.

Malaga away has been a potential banana slip for us for a quite few years...

Malaga, Deportivo and Las Palmas are the worst teams in La Liga imo. We already drew once with those 3 teams, we're not losing more points.

From 11 to 5 points lead, what a genius this coach is, Paulinho played while Coutinho was on the bench?

The only explanation of why we didn't play coutinho and dembele vs las plamas is to play them against atletico. otherwise i cannot understand why they didn't play. As much as the ref screwed us, the players and the coach screwed up as well. Why the fk was suarez not rested? He had to calm down to not receive a yellow card when we all know that aggression and that fight that he has is probably his biggest strength. He was like playing with one hand behind his back all game. If Valverde wanted to rest Rakitic, I would have played fking Gomes instead of Paulinho. I think that is Gomes best position and he at least contributes more to the buildup than Paulinho.

I can maybe understand why valverde played vidal instead of dembele in an away match as vidal plays a more safer approach and dembele has more potential of more turnovers than vidal which can be dangerous to us. But we should have built on that momentum from the Girona game and I felt that we should have played a front three of coutinho, messi and dembele and 3 midfielders of iniesta, busi and gomes. Messi and Suarez should have done so much better with that 2 vs 1 chance.. And I hope that we have a new back up LB as I think Digne is better at CB than LB. The ref, valverde and the team screwed up. We still have an advantage vs Atletico that they have to attack more when they have to win, but the form they are in, we might see our first loss of the league. I'm so hoping that I am wrong.

Vidal is dispossessed more than Dembele, and had more misplaced passes than Dembele has ever had in his career. Not to mention his zero dribbling ability and crossing threat. Who do you think will result in more turnovers?

The same ad nauseam "Vidal and Paulinho being safer" has been exposed through and through. They actually are feeding the opponents, if you take enough notice.

If EV decides to start the same lineup against Atletico at our home, I think no one can really defend him anymore. Too many bizarre decisions, obsession with certain players, yet when other players does the same, they are dropped almost immediately without hesitation. (Semedo, Denis, Paco)

There's no reason to be struggling with an 11 points lead, and still depend on Messi to bail us out.

Coutinho and Dembélé will not play against Atlético.

Or EV might start Coutinho on the RM against them....which would be bette than Gomes/Pau/Vidal, but a huge waste of his abilities.

People are not going to like it, but I would consider dropping Iniesta to start both. Sooner or later it just have to happen. If it happened to Xavi at the same age and him accepting it for the good of the team, then why cannot EV do the same? We need the pace and willingeness to play more creative passes back in the team against top sides, otherwise all the creative burden falls back on Messi.

I'm totally down with dropping Iniesta. Game will be fierce and intense. Not sure he's up for this rythm after playing vs Las Palmas last night. But he won't drop Iniesta.

Teams have started to figure out that Messi is the only big creative mind in Valverde's system. He's surrounded him with hard working players.

Not going to happen under Valverde unless Iniesta decides to leave the club. Valverde is a defense orientated, conservative, short-term thinker. While Lucho had his flaws one thing he certainly had was balls. He benched Xavi for Rakitic, converted Roberto into a RB when our options at that position were limited, dropped Masche for Umtiti, played 3 at the back in important CL matches etc. Under Valverde none of the aforementioned decisions would've been made. He treats the next match he happens to be coaching like it's his last and every match is as important as the CL Final in his eyes. He is too scared to try anything new or innovative out of the fear it may backfire and chooses the safest option at every turn.
