Remember when we used to be the team who played their football on the opponent's half? United literally dominated us in the 2nd half, a toothless uninspired United. Only their lack of finishing and quality in general was what prevented them from turning the game around. The worst thing being that they're so bad they still didn't get a shot on target so if you look at the livescore it looks like we dominated them, which we did, but only until the goal. After that the only 'attacking' we've done were passing around wanting to waste the time and not attacking at all. Last 10 minutes were disgusting to watch, we looked like a Mourinho team, no surprise with baby-Mourinho coaching us.
This is the thing I hate about managers like Valverde, Mourinho, Simeone. Score one goal, then immediately turn to defending that lead. It's a small team mentality. This team is too good for that, Barca has had a system for years, and these players are used to a certain mentality. And it showed multiple times under other managers already that we actually begin struggling the minute we give up control and let our opponents attack. But before Valverde we did that only on occasion, but now we do every time after we get the lead in the match. But our defenders and GK take the center stage, and because they are still world class players, we still grind out results, let it be from lack of quality of our opponents or sheer luck many times too.
And that really is the main problem with Valverde. On paper it all looks great (shots on goal, possession), so if you look at our matches through the livescore stats, or win percentage in general, you'd think we play fantastic football. And let's be honest, many fans do that. But if you take a closer look, really follow the club closely, watch, like really WATCH every one of our games and how we're winning, you start to notice problems. The bad thing here is that such mentality, where you're winning without a clear system, it all blows up on you sooner or later, like it did last season in Rome. And like I suspect it could this season at Anfield at the latest. Not to mention that with Valverde, there's further problems with player management, where great players have great games, then get frozen out of the team for no apparent reason. And I'm not just talking about Malcom here. Alena was very good in the opening months of the season, it seemed like he was becoming a really important figure for the team and earning more and more trust from Valverde. And here we are now, subbed in for garbage time and playing one full match/per month.
