Nah, expectation vs result. We have 4-0 Liverpool, 3-0 Roma, 4-0 PSG, 3-0 Juve, 2-0 Atletico, and you can add a few years behind the treble with 7-0 Bayern and 1-0 Atletico.
Of course, we did have that one year of success. But our squad has been by FAR better than PSG every year, and getting embarrassed to this level. At least they aren't as big a club to be bottling to this level. Ever since Pep left, we have 1 incredible year surrounded by everything else being total utter humiliation.
PSG on the other hand have 2 bottling years while losing to simply better teams in the other years.
I agree, sometimes against better teams, perhaps, but after the significant financial outlay on Galactico signings, the expectations are sky high for this PSG team to compete with and win over other elite clubs, and not get eliminated against Europa League contenders like Manchester United in an embarrassing fashion similar to the ones we have experienced against Liverpool and Roma. Albeit our defeat against Liverpool was significantly worse, and should have resulted in a Valverde getting the sack after the Copa del Rey, regardless of today's result.
Also, the criticism that we are now seeing is more a consequence of how complacent, flat and defensive we have been in season defining games, this year especially. Of course, one could also make the argument that Pep Guardiola has gotten knocked out of the Champion's League two years in a row with Manchester City and not living up to expectations. The difference is in the philosophy and leadership between Barcelona and Manchester City. Their game is entertaining, fast and attack-minded, with a passionate and driven manager at the helm. We have a pragmatic and dull mid-tier coach who is not qualified to guide Barcelona into the future.
I really would not be able to grasp the decision to keep Valverde on for another season. It would be a decision riddled with cowardliness, weakness and complacency by a president who has failed to keep our football DNA and philosophy alive.
