Blaming him for Bayern loss, rofl, obsession with poor Valverde is taking new levels. He was decent coach and had a good season, mediocre season and poor season with us.
Most of Valverde supporters agreed that his time should have been up after losing out to Liverpool, but for some reason he was allowed to continue and then horribly switched mid-season after our game had been starting to improve finally, for absolutely awful Setien.
Valverde did what he was tasked to do, bring at least La Liga, keep the old vet core happy, by playing them and accept whoever was transferred in. This was in line with board giving them high wages, so that Barto and co could finish up the presidency and leave the mess whoever came after them. He was never a strong character and great motivator, but he was quite good tactician, realizing soon that our aging squad was not really capable of playing the football fans were used to. So he adapted, we grinded out results in league, but ultimately failed in CL.
Morten is right saying that Barcelona (maybe Juve and Bayern as well) is the only squad were fanbase demands coach to be sacked after delivering back-to-back league titles.
Our results after Valverde show that he was important part of puzzle that kept things at least on decent level. Setien was absolutely godawful, why are not people trashing him in his thread. Had no authority over players (unlike Valverde, who was respected), was completely outplayed in most important matches and lost the plot completely vs Bayern, something Valverde never did.
I do not get why people are still obsessed with blaming the humilations on Valverde only, while stupid management by board and individual chokes and mental weakness from players played just as big part.
