what abysmal performances are you talking about ? Messi was clearly the best in the world in the first 6 months of last year. Voting ended in October. Only reason people ( mostly CR stans ) downplay Messi's last Ballon is because Lewandowski didn't get one in 2020 and last year didn't count performances in the 2020.

If Lewa got his Ballon in 2020 , last year would have been a landslide in favor of Messi and not as close at it was.

I agree that most voters would approach their votes similarly. However, the new rules only allow journalists from the top 100 NTs to vote while votes from coaches and captains were allowed from 2010-2015 and nearly twice as many journalists were voting as well.

For instance, 2010 would certainly not have gone to Messi and probably went to Sneijder as he won the journalist vote with Messi coming in 4th iirc.

I totally agree.
A defender/midfielder/goalkeeper can have a great performance and perform just as decisively as a striker (goal scorer).
