Well England is basically a free pass to the quarters, and once they get there, they wouldn't expect to move forward in any case.

Italy played with a C-team though.

True, but it didn't even cross my mind that they would lose, was so focused on Belgium/Sweden.. Feels sour after the Czech win :/

Is it really a bad option though if their aim is to reach as far as possible instead of winning it? Now they get England instead of Croatia. Maybe they figured beating Croatia is too slim of a chance.

You can always count on England bottling it somehow. Iceland-England 2-1.

This tournament doesn't feel legitimate to me this time around. You have to be atrocious to not make it out of the group stages, only a third of the teams are eliminated and most of the teams are absolute fodder. Was the expansion to 24 teams really necessary?

Why not let all 50 teams in the tournament in 2020 and have a round of 32?

Expanding to 24 teams isn't the problem. The issue is having 16 teams advance.

Its a simple fix, winner of each group advances plus the 2 best runners up. Basically straight into the quarter finals like before. With this format no team plays for 3rd place like Slovakia did against England, instead everyone plays attacking football knowing that they need to win the group or get around 6-7 points for a potential second place.

This Belgian side is so underwhelming, they could totally lose to Hungary. So who is going to stop Portugal? Hungary again?

Its their first ever win at a major tournament, maybe that meant too much for them not to score.
