I don't suppose that makes any difference to United.

So what’s with the narrative of ‘who cares if they’d gone out if they had a spot anyway’?

The nonsense of English approach to EL pre 2017 as if nothing was at stake in that comp for teams who had already qualified never had much justification.

The Europa League matters a lot more to teams when CL spot at stake to point some started to prioritise it.

United tonight wanted to win to lift the trophy so not much relevance to that game but definitely made a difference in recent seasons.

Sevilla should win this one as both Inter and Shakhtar are beatable. The only thing to fear is extreme fatigue by this point - playing 4 matches in 2 weeks with more or less the same players takes an IMMENSE toll on the players physically.

CL spot shouldn’t have made a difference. Arrogant Brits between 2010-2015, who treated their league as Americans treat their sports as ‘World Series’ sounding off as if it was ever so good, have failed to place importance in secondary continental competition. And even when they did they had hopelessly inexperienced representation with no depth of talent to sustain the run. Scared talentless materialists.

United’s run was fine btw. Just find it mildly amusing how supposedly garbage La Liga still manages more sides in European finals than this strong strong league.

Of course it made a difference.

Qualifying for CL is the aim for a lot of clubs at a certain point of season and if EL is seen as more likely it is prioritised.

More sides in finals this season.... last season all four finalists in Europe were from EPL. Season before two of four were.

United are a better side than Sevilla but couldnt get it done. No huge loss for them either way.

Europe League win is worth a lot of money and if you would also guarantee spot to CL, we might be talking about massive amounts of money.

Of course it did, and still does. It's a second-rate competition. The only real value it has is that you can qualify for the Champions League through it. A top club is never going to look back fondly on a Europa League trophy, because all it does is remind them what a bad place they were in at the time. If you'd offered United this trophy or 4th in the Premier League, they'd have taken 4th every time.

I said it shouldn't have. Not that it did or did not.

No. Lots of value in it without the CL spot before it got introduced.

Doesn't have to be a top club. Plenty of those didn't have successful runs.

It should matter to clubs however they see fit and it was second rate to other priorities before CL place.

Second rate competition that they would not care much about unless had little else to play for or found themselves in very latter stages.

For most teams, EL is a competition they would love to win, but for a club like United its not exactly the end of the world to go out, their fans dont seem too upset.

But its still a trophy, so why not go for it if your team screwed up and ended up in the EL? Not that United didnt try, Sevilla were simply very efficient.

I really don't think that's how it's seen anymore in the UK.
