Of course it did, and still does. It's a second-rate competition. The only real value it has is that you can qualify for the Champions League through it. A top club is never going to look back fondly on a Europa League trophy, because all it does is remind them what a bad place they were in at the time. If you'd offered United this trophy or 4th in the Premier League, they'd have taken 4th every time.
I don't understand the logic in that. If winning the EL gets you seeded 1st in the following season's CL, then why would finishing 4th in the league be preferable? It's nonsensical.
