Agnelli still doesn't get it, maybe none of them do. If you're going to blame Boris, then just point the finger at the entire UK, because there was no way they were gonna let this go down without a fight (unlike Spain, who just shrugged and bent over for Papa Perez like normal). It's not about our politics, Brexit, or any of that. Football means so much to so many people here, for some people (whatever you think of them) it's their whole life, and they'd be damned if they went down without fighting this.

The English reaction, not just from the fans, media, and government but also from the players, was instrumental in stopping this. By all accounts, the players were ready to go on strike to stop it happening.

Pointing the finger at politics really betrays a complete failure to understand why this failed, from Agnelli. It wasn't politics that brought down this grubby plan, but passion and love for the game.

Quick question, why didn’t Johnson and the British government immediately come out to kill Project Big Picture like they did this time? Because it wasn’t as bad as the ESL?

Nah, the safe spots is still based on merits and aren't arbitrary.
Also, ESL had a problem of 15 out of 20 clubs guaranteed places for 23 years, leaving just 5 spots to fight for.
This kills the turnover in the game tbh, if it was 5-8 founder clubs it would have been easier pill to swallow.

Yes. They wanted too much short term with no backing. But it's not a secret that's the same direction Uefa wants to go into. Just not as openly.

Safe spots will be merit based, but still exsist to get more 'big clubs' in the competition. It's where the money is.

For some strange reason I feel we and Real Madrid are much, much closer than before,
or much closer than I thought. Yes, no more mes un que club scheisse.

This feeling disgusts me.

If the other 10 clubs easily got out like they did, I doubt there is any financial penalties or consequences.

Only 8 are out, 1 saying we are sensitive to fans and another saying ESL can't be proceed atm.
Wolfie had a nice article about it few posts ago from financial Times, basically the binding penalty will not be paid but the remaining clubs can go to court and extract some money from them, even withdrawn clubs are aware of it.

Dor me, it sounds like those clubs could pay few millions at worst, so wasn't worth the trouble.
Not sure if RM/Juve will alienate top clubs against them by going to court either.

Yeah, I don’t think Real Madrid and the ESL will go after clubs for quitting either. If anything, they want to get on the good terms with them to enlist their support in case they launch ESL 2.0 next time.

This is really making us look bad, digging our heels and being one of the last ones to get out.

Looking at how UEFA praised City for pulling out, i doubt they will punish anyone.

Shame, but at the end of the day its all about money, so they dont really care as long as things go back to normal.

Perez won't likely give a fuck about the English next time around and might seek to make it "Continental Europe vs EPL hegemony" branding them as traitors and main culprits of the cause. Especially if he continues to take the line of going against UEFA who are now getting in the bed with City and possibly some others. Current situation benefits no one but the English, if it does at all.

Thanks for the link to the FT article. There is a paywall apparently.

Without the English clubs there will never be an ESL though, at least it will not be attracting the kind of money they would have hoped.
