Do we have a player currently of same quality/profile as Walsh ready to take over? She seemed to be running the show completely in midfield from the few CL games I saw last season.
Not really. Romeu is rotating a lot but in important games we'll return to the Patri-Aitana-Alexia midfield that worked well before Alexia's injury.
also, Keira's role has diminished in recent weeks/months, probably since the club accepted she had no intention to renew. There were already reports she wanted to return to England last summer to be closer to her familly and we apparently rejected Arsenal offer that would be a world record fee at that point.
We'll never now reasons behind her decision to leave but I'd guess a bit of all of them (family, money) and I think one factor that is most concerning for future is lack of competition in Liga F. It will be increasingly harder to keep (especially foreign) talent at the club. Players will still join us as long as we continue to win but won't stay for more than a few years. Winning is great but at some point you also get tired beating most domestic opponents by 5 goals. And ofc homegrown players like Aitana and Alexia won't stay forever either. At some point they'll want a new challenge like Mariona last summer and we'll have to be prepared when they'll leave.
I think club has good strategy of signing lot of youngsters like Vicky, Kika, Sydney and then ofc we continue to produce good players though most of them lately couldn't break into a stacked first team and had to leave but things could change soon.
We should do everything in our power to stay as good and competitive as we can long term but that won't be enough if CD Tacon, Atleti and other teams won't improve even more to challenge us. Madrid made significant investment over past few years and I'm sure Florentino will continue to do that because he hates losing against us but not so sure about other teams. If Barca improves for 5% every season other teams should improve for 20-30% just to keep up because they are so far behind. I'm talking from a full season perspective not a single indvidual game when strange things can happen like we've seen against Levante.
In games we've struggled is usually when we're complacent (which is another negative effect of being dominant for so long) or wasteful upfront. I think Spanish teams have learned how to play against us better defensively but only until the first goal. They are not physically nor mentally ready to keep that pressure off for 90 minutes and when we break them down they don't have quality to get back into games then we can put another 2 or 3 past them in a short time which means game over.
But without serious investment that I don't see coming in Spain improving overall level of Liga F is unlikely if not impossible. It's clear WSL is already becoming the next EPL where most best players will eventually want to go and then we also have Lyon (with big financial backing from Michel Kang and former Barca brain trust - Markel Zubizarreta as their SD) who wants to get back on top and ofc a rich PSG and some good German teams (though I'm not that affraid of them longterm) as well.
So we should enjoy FCB Femeni team as I already see some signs of (expected) decline that will become more evident in coming years with more good players leaving. And ofc also a downgrade at coaching position. Like players good coaches also won't stay forever (Zubi Jr. is a significant loss as well). System with internal promotions has worked great until now but in near future I think it will be time for an "outsider" (like we did with Flick) to bring fresh ideas and possibly prolong our competitive window on a top European level.
We'll see if aditional money from the new Champions league format will also help not only big clubs that already have starting advantage (better squads and more money) but also likes of Atletico and Sociedad to become more competitive not only in Spain but also in Europe.
CL prize money for this season
€400,000 base allocation for each group-stage team
€50,000 per win in the group stage, and €17,000 per draw
€20,000 bonus for winning their group
€160,000 for qualification for the quarter-finals
€180,000 for qualification for the semi-finals
€200,000 for the runner-up
€350,000 for the winning team
So a maximum 1,4m for a winning team. Pretty shite considering some overpaid divas in men's football earn that money in a month or two.
Good news is that amount will be doubled in next three years.
Performance bonuses in the league phase will be paid per win and per draw, in addition to a league ranking bonus. There will also be staggered knockout phase bonuses, meaning the eventual champions could earn up to €1.995m in the first two seasons, and €2.8m from 2027/28 onwards – significant increases of 41% and 99% on the maximum €1.41m in the current format.
Women's club football in Europe will enjoy a major boost from next season onwards, featuring a revamped and fully centralised UEFA Women's Champions League, the kick-off of the new UEFA Women's Europa Cup and a new financial distribution system that will benefit clubs across the continent.
