No big club relies that much on their academy. You can have 1-2 players that really establish themselves, but bulk of players is always bought.
So while you are waiting for the "eggs to hatch", the other big clubs are already winning and have an advantage. That La Masia golden generation is a once in a lifetime occurrence.

Another argument is that kids need stars in their peak to learn from by playing by their side. Without those stars, they don't develop as well. It's another thing for Gavi to grow up with Fermin and Pedri, and another with an Iniesta, or a Modric, or role-models of that elite class.
Maybe we can do with some good oldies, like what we've tried to do with Lewandowski and Gundogan, but I'd obviously prefer to have these players before their Arabia days.
