Vilanova started to play Song as centre back after a long chat with Arsenal coach Wenger at the coaches forum earlier this month. [sport]

I hope Wenger wasn't trolling him...
:) he actually might be.Still dont understand why we buy midfielders for a midfielder price and then shift them into cb position.Crazy

It's always advisable to take those Sport stories with a pinch of salt.

I actually heard or read somewhere from sources with Arsenal that Alex was getting a little bit too big in the head, had a big ego and it could be that Wenger was just trolling Tito and wanted to get rid of him.

Or maybe they're just spreading stories just because Alex left them......

Shifting Song is more "forced" than chosen. I think Song was bought to replace Keite in the first place and if Tito really wanted a pure CB we would have gone for Vertonghen, Hummels whatever..

But I think there are also other reasons: learning new positions and the traits required for it keeps players sharp. It's a way to prevent sluggishness. On top of that, constant evolvement both as a player and a human being, enhancing players' abilities, diversifying play-styles and to be able to adjust to different situations is an integral part of this clubs philosophy. So, in a way, I think it makes sense.

Indeed, Bartomeu said in a recent press-conference that at first, they were trying to sign a pure CB, but after Keita announced his departure, they instead opted to go for a DM that also could play at CB.

So in fact it's Keite who's responsible for our uncomfortable situation at CB now ;)

They could have been smarter and get a cb who can play dm. Not the other way around. Specially because Keita wasn't a dm.

That is just one lame excuse from Bartomeu, and we didnt have that much money for a good CB - DM player.

Why lame excuse? At the beginning of the summer, we did try to sign thiago silva, no?

It's only later in the summer that our interest for javi martinez (and eventually Song) arose.

At some point, we were also rumoured to be interested in agger, but maybe those were just rumours.

I think they should had listened to Frank de Boer and get Vertonghen instead of Song.

Greta game tactically, unlucky not to win near the end. The result is even more remarkable given the defensive issues and the opposition that usually slaughters a defense like this...and yet people are filling every thread with "Tito explain yourself", "Tito why no VIlla?". People aren't grateful.
