Yes. But marketing helps much more!

Why would Asian chose EPL over Liga? EPL targets Asian markets - that's the answer! They play at noon (12p.m - 5p.m) for the Asian countries to watch because it is at 7p.m then - in Japan, Korea, China, Vietnam, Thai... which is perfect!! Do you know in order to watch Barca/RM, we have to wake up at 3 - 5a.m in the morning? Do Liga has Asian markets in mind? I don't think so. What else? They sign Asian players (Park, Kagawa, Ryo...) so that Japanese and Korean - which are two richest demographic parts in Asia - pay attention to them.

It's all about marketing. It's not like because we understand English that we watch Holywood movies or EPL talk shows - TRANSLATION is all that needed. My friends here in Vietnam don't speak English, yet they are either MU, Arsenal, Liverpool or Chelsea's fans. I speak English yet I prefer La Liga.

I'm not saying language doesn't mean anything. It does. It affects the preference of North A and South A viewers, as much as demographic, historic and some other factors... Just saying marketing is much more important!

Most have rudimentary knowledge of English. Its the same with Hollywood or music or whatever. English speaking countries dominate completely. If people didnt understand a word of what they were saying, American movies, music or media would be ignored completely.

What language are we speaking here? In pretty much every county the second language is English.
I rest my case.

Agreed.. Most of my friends don't like watching La Liga because they have to watch mostly at early morning.. Nobody's willing to watch it at that time apparently. Some are even more unreasonable by claiming that "I don't speak spanish/german/dutch/portugese so why should I support these teams?" Some haven't even heard of these European teams. Last season was the first time for most of my friends to have heard about Dortmund and even Bayern.

So it's about the timezone problem, the lack of english speaking players, cultural differences and the lack of marketing.

But so far, I really appreciated Barca coming to Asia. A lot of people know a little bit more about Barca and the Spanish football instead of just relating them to diving.

English is only a small factor, I have no doubt about that. Most countries have commentary in their native language. I watch Sky Sports for English commentary and analysis on La Liga. I also watch Messi interviews thanks to the power of translation. The EPL is primarily promoted in the native language of the desired countries speakers.
The EPL was broadcast in Asia regularly long before other leagues and as a brand it has been marketed aggressively. The power of imagery is the greatest marketing tool, it makes no difference that a non native English speaker has no idea what Steven Gerard is saying in his thick accent as long as they identify him as a star.

Getting it's foot into the Asian market early has given the EPL a head start which will be almost impossible to overturn.

This tomato juice commercial is a perfect example of how the EPL and it's clubs are promoted without the use of English.

The premier league is like a Hollywood blockbuster, they make a lot of money not because they are the best but because they are the best marketed.*

If la Liga was marketed as well as the Premier league as many people would watch it. * The product is better for sure, players too and Barca and Real are by far the biggest clubs in the world.*

I also read a tweet on Barca stuff where someone from La Liga board said that more people watch it in Europe, Africa and South America and the EPL is watched by much more in Asia and North America. *But Asia and North America are much richer parts of the world which contributes to EPL earnings.*

Let's be honest, the EPL is a far superior product to La Liga. It has a host of foreign stars, packed stadiums, financial stability and a sense of equality. As a competition it is far more competitive with United, City and Chelsea in a 3 horse race this year while Spurs, Arsenal and Liverpool has the potential financial clout to make a push for the title.

La Liga has become the laughing stock of Europe with its financial disparity. The big 2 are set to win the league for the next 2 decades while everyone else has become a feeder club or financial mess.

The German league has a far more sense of equality, financial stability, no money doped clubs with oil billionaire crooks using their clubs as self-promotion, even more packed stadiums than in England, quite frankly it is totally superior to the EPL on so many factors, but lo and behold, it is a non-English speaking country so its popularity is very low compared to the EPL.

Even though some dont speak any English whatsoever, a substantial proportion do speak some, and that makes all the difference. Its not like the EPL suddenly decided to play at 12-5 to target the Asian markets. They have always played at that time, same with the German league for example.

Bundesliga is the best league in the world when you regard economy, stadiums, fans, atmosphere. However, I think that the BPL is the best league in the world when it comes to football. There are many more great teams (Utd, City, Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham, Liverpool)

The only reason they are great is because of money. 10 or 15 years ago that last sentence would be laughed at.

The very low popularity of Bundesliga just proves the point even more. It is not English speaking, it cant compete with the money in PL as a result of the English language and billionaire crooks from developing countries pouring money into the league. Bundesliga can have the greatest atmosphere, big crowds, equally shared TV revenue, matches at midday, well run league, it doesnt matter at all for popularity. People dont understand German, so popularity will remain very low, and with it comes less money. A vicious circle.

It lacks worldwide appeal because it is not as 'attractive'. The EPL's biggest advantage over the Bundesliga is its array of foreign players, I believe with the addition of Kenyan Victor Wanyama to the EPL there are now 100 nationalities in the premier league.

Anyways we should probably get back to Gareth Bale.

Bundesliga is packed with foreigners, it doesnt mean much. Some of the greatest Asians have played there or play there as well. The big difference is language. Thats what seperates the EPL from the rest of the leagues.

It is very much related to Gareth Bale, because with the huge popularity of the EPL because of language and money doping, comes huge price tags not related to footballing skills.

Why would a random armchair fan from the other side of the world care about financial stability, sugar daddies or average attendances? Or a language they probably don't even speak, for that matter? In China for example, only 0.83% of the population speaks English. The difference isn't language, language is a non-issue for this kind of entertainment, the difference is marketing. Premier League clubs spent their pre-season in the US and far East with the backing of Murdochs global media empire, while Dortmund and Shalke didn't even leave Europe.

Why do Barca and Madrid go on Asian tours if language is such a 'barrier' for them? Or for that matter why do Italian clubs play games over in the US? The English language argument is desperately poor, it's significance is a mere drop in the ocean of the EPL's foreign success.

I dunno, I think the football in England is terrible. It has packed stadiums and foreign stars and a sense of equality but Spanish football is better and the absolute best players play there, it is much more romantic as well, clubs like Athletic Bilbao don't exist in England and alot EPL clubs sell out to anyone with money. I think it is marketing and marketing alone that is the reason why it is the most popular league. If Billionaires bought the likes of Atletico, Valencia, Sevilla etc then Spain would be more competitive but that won't happen for what ever reason.

And I hope it never does. Barca and Madrid are best and most popular clubs in the world and their are owned by their fans. Who owns United,Liverpool,Arsenal or Chelsea? Whoever forks out most dough.

Besides, every best player from EPL is desperate to join either of those two clubs of La Liga.

United are bigger worldwide than Madrid and Barca. The international audience couldn't care less who a club is owned by.

I agree it is far more Romantic, and I would also agree that the football is of a better quality, that is to say it's more pleasing on the eye. The EPL though has a faster paced/action packed feel to it which is also very appealing. It's become very clear that the EPL is becoming number 1, billionaires or no billionaires La Liga is falling apart. Valencia could end up as the next Deportivo which is painful to watch. Imagine if the likes of AM could have held on to their biggest stars.

Maybe it's time to scrap the Champions league and create a European super league. The romantic side of football would die but the quality on show would be immense... anywho we should probably get back on topic.

Bale moving to RM is a bad move imo, in fact it stinks of 'modern football'. If he stays he could be part of something really special with Spurs building a title winning team, where as if he leaves he will most likely spend the next few years outshone by his team-mates.

I can't say about Barca but Real still enjoys higher market than any other club in the world...

Anyway, the reason why the cash rich sugar boys don't invest in Atletico Madrids of Spain is because of the higher market the EPL clubs enjoy... It would probably change if the income on TV rights is shared equally by the clubs in Spain. But it would just be a minor change!!
