Gerardo "Tata" Martino

DonAK

President of FC Barcelona
If the rumours about him being the favourite to take over Argentina after the WC is true then it would be great.

His first interview since leaving Barca, courtesy of Inside Spanish Football:

“What makes the difference between large institutions such as Barcelona, and smaller institutions, is that the former are obliged to win all the time, while the latter can settle for doing it every now and again. Barca have a gene of winning installed in their DNA.”

“Very good players came together in Barcelona and never got tired of winning”, he continued. “The players know that the current, privileged position of Barcelona will only remain if they continue to play well and win.”

The ex-Barca coach was also full of praise to his compatriot and former player Leo Messi, who, according to Martino, has a very special attitude to go with his talent.

“Messi is not a player who constantly thinks about doing something different, the different comes naturally to him. One day he thought that it was time to start scoring from direct free-kicks and he began to convert them. If you look at his first three or four years as a player, you see that he didn’t even shoot free-kicks. All the records that Leo wants to beat, he will beat, because his young age is also very scary.”

Having returned to Argentina, Martino is – quite naturally – also invested in his country’s World Cup dream, and fancies Argentina’s chances in the tournament.

“The team is solid. I think the team is very focused on the goal of doing something special. This group of players is convinced that their time has come”, he said. “In the qualifying matches, they won with solidity.”

Finally, comparing Argentine football to that of Europe, Martino was certain about the difference in the competitiveness of the leagues.

“The ability to travel elsewhere gave me different parameters to measure the level of our football. The level is different from Europe”, he concluded.

Didn't say anything bad about his time at the club. That's very professional of him. Good luck with your endeavors Tata!

I wanted him to say what "divided the team" as he put it after the Getafe match. What good is it that he only says positive things, someone should step up and say what's wrong with this club and this team, I just don't believe the "everything is fine" BS anymore because it directly contradicts what we see on the pitch and frankly, I don't believe we are told even a fraction of truth of what's going on behind the scenes with all the shit this club has had to go through this season.

But he's a Newell's Legend. Why would he go there; especially when there are likely European teams that want him?

To not put up with snobby European clubs and players who question everything he does and undermine his actions? Newell's and River aren't direct rivals and both have a culture of attacking football, I'm sure some fans would be disappointed, but if he's feeling disillusioned by European football, there's no better choice than El Más Grande.

He's probably taking a break though, allegedly he rejected the Malaga job.
