Gini Wijnaldum

why not? it's not like he hasn't won it all with them.

this is his last big paycheck in a top european side. he can then retire or milk more money in the US, china, emirates etc

again, people forgetting that it's all about the money for these players.

i don't fancy this transfer because it goes against our rebuilding phase and we already have pjanic and busquets on 2-3 years contracts.

Just because of how loved he is at Liverpool and he's currently part of a successful side. I know he's won things but 1 League and 1 CL, isn't exactly drowning in silverware where the motivation has gone to win anymore. They are still in the middle of their successful period, despite dropping off a bit this season.

I'd be for it because he's an instant upgrade on modern day Busquets.

I also think a rebuilding phase doesn't necessarily mean every transfer needs to be under 25 or whatever, some players prolong their peak or are fresher at 30 than others. If Wijnaldum serves a purpose for 2 years than I'd be for it. 2-3 years is a long time in football.

1. that liverpool side overachieved by quite a bit
2. most of the players in their squad aren't legendary, some of them not even worldclass. they've implemented a system to perfection and it works with the personnel they have.
3. don't think many players chase the trophies. money, family are more important. since he's no ibrahimovic to go where he pleases, my take is that he could favor money in his 30s
4. we can't get rid of busquets. only maybe if he leaves on his own this summer. to japan or something.

Yeah, but for how long? Maybe for 2 years max and I sincerely doubt we will offer him a 2y contract. It will probably be a 4y contract and that's way too long for a guy who will have 31 couple of months after we sign him. As I sad before 2y (maybe 2+1y) contract would be a perfect solution.

Two years is a long time in football though, people get too caught up with the 'we are set for the next amount of years' narrative sometimes. Players levels drop and new players emerge all the time. If Wijnaldum arrived today, him paired with De Jong instantly improves the dynamism in the midfield. Unless he has a physical decline of epic proportions in the next 12 months.

I agree that age can be an issue, but Wijnaldum on a free transfer is good business.

Would probably get a good 2 years out of him. Played well under Koeman and with Frenkie. It's one of the few signings of an older player that actually makes sense.

wants to leave healthy and competitive club with clear sporting project and join club that's in ruins in every way imaginable?sounds like another player who will come here to collect paychecks and enjoy the weather

That is, when some fly out of the Champions League, lose 1: 7, this is a system, and when others lose 2: 8 and fly out of the Champions League, it's ruins? They lost the last match, despite Manet's diving.

Barca are in a position where need to try and develop young players and keep a certain standard while doing that.. and to be done with little money.

Signing Wijnaldum helps stabilise for next few years at from no fee. Ticks a couple boxes.

Not even certain to be only couple years either as likes of Modric is 5 years older, Kroos is older, KDB is less than year younger. Not all mids are like the slower Barca old ones.

Not sure he will sign having said that.

For free to maintain level at 30 Wijnaldum would be a good signing and better than Barca have. Particularly in current financial situation.

Great point. I don't love it because the age but we need to keep some sort of quality on this roster even with a re-build.
