Gini Wijnaldum

Would be nice if we could get him for free next year. Kind of trade Busi's experience for his.
Him and Pjanic would be the only midfielders over 30.

Koeman probably won't be here next season so no need to get Wijnaldum then. And I don't see L'pool letting his contract run down, they'll either sell now or renew him.

If Lpool bought Thiago as drummed than we actually might get him.

Don't see Thiago as a replacement for Wijnaldum, they could have both. At this point Wijnaldum coming or not really depends on two things imo:

1. will we offload Suarez and Vidal, and sell some other players like Rafinha and Todibo fast enough so we can make a few new signings and who will be our priority amongst Gini, Depay, Dest and Garcia who seemed to be our most likely/realistic targets. I don't see us getting more than 1 or 2 of them if anyone at all.

2. I think Wijnaldum is keeping his options open for now but there is not much time for another prolonged saga with transfer window closing in less than 3 weeks and L'pool surely also won't wait until the last day to sell him (he's still a useful player and not a dead wood for them) so I think we probably have until the end of the month to get him if we're serious. I think if he'll express his wish to leave and we'll come with an offer close to 20m soon enough they'll let him go but how much does he really wants to come here?

I am Leg End
I wrote this in response to someone asking me in the Thiago thread.

Gini and Jurgen spoke to each other last week and Jurgen wants Gini to stay and Gini isn't pushing to move but it's the contract and what's left of it that is the problem. Koeman wants Gini and Gini is open to going, but there has been no official bid from Barca as far as I know. Think you need to raise funds/move players on first.

Wouldn't surprise me if we kept him this season and you sign him on a pre-contract in January. I haven't really got any detailed information though.

Don't think he's making the move to Barcelona. The club's a shambles , Liverpool seem to be off loading brewster instead for around 30M and that probably pays up for Thiago's transfer. They aren't in a rush to sell Gini. They would rather have Wilson,Grujic & Shaqiri off their books and still get the money to buy someone like Sarr and keep both Gini and Thiago.

There isn't enough footballing sense for Gini to move to Barcelona though. Yeah, If it's about , "I always wanted to play at a big club like Barcelona", but Liverpool are a big club in themselves and Barca's sporting project is a shambles and players are being left and hung out to dry pretty quickly by the management led by Bartomeu. Koeman might well lose his job in the first few months if Messi decides he's had enough and throws another hissy fit.

wijnaldum, henderson, thiago, keita, fabinho damn that's overkill

Add the second options being Milner, Jones, Minamino. Liverpool are pretty stocked in midfield, What they needed was a bit of flair to unlock the teams which play 3 at the back with 2 wingbacks, and with thiago and the way Jones and Minamino are shaping up, They will have that.

UK Press now saying he has rejected Liverpool contract and wants Barca move.

Would be a very good signing for free but cant see any of the Liverpool journalitsts who usually seem more reliable reporting this.

Wouldn't mind him.

If RK is still here next season I think getting someone like Wijnaldum is the only way to keep Busi out of the starting XI. Yeah, I know he's also 30 but he still has legs and could be good for 2-3 seasons. In the meantime we can see what we have in Ilaix.

Guys whenever we signed 30y old players it ended up badly. The club should aim for someone younger. Wijnaldum could end up being Pjanic 2.0 and than we would be stuck with both of them for the next 3-4 seasons. We should really aim for a midfielder between 23-28 years of age.

Barca could end up with a team that is structured poorly once again. We will have a bunch of players from 18-22y and and bunch of them older than 30y. The most productive years for players are 23 to 28y, hence, we really need more players from that age group.

I'd be amazed if he rejects Liverpool to join this current Barca. For free he's a decent signing though.

For free to maintain level at 30 Wijnaldum would be a good signing and better than Barca have. Particularly in current financial situation.

I agree that for free he could be a good signing. Problem is the length of the contract. If we intend to give him a 4y contract than I would rather pass on him. I would consider him only on a 2y or a 3y contract max but I am not sure if he would accept that. I suppose we are all sick of signing players who are past their prime. Just look at the example of Pjanic or Arda who came here to enjoy their retirement.

why not? it's not like he hasn't won it all with them.

this is his last big paycheck in a top european side. he can then retire or milk more money in the US, china, emirates etc

again, people forgetting that it's all about the money for these players.

i don't fancy this transfer because it goes against our rebuilding phase and we already have pjanic and busquets on 2-3 years contracts.
