It's not exactly his first time that he missed a crucial penalty or missed a crucial 1 on 1 opportunity....
That wasn't a crucial 1 on 1 opportunity. We was never in control of that ball because the pass was poor.

Didn't he score vs Holland in the semifinal of the World Cup? That was probably his most important penalty for Argentina and he scored. Many players miss penalties when the pressure is on. Doesn't mean much. Messi bottled it vs. Chelsea. So what? It happens. Baggio missed it in 94, Shevchenko bottled it in 2005, Trezeguet in 2003 and 2006. Countless of other examples. Messi himself said he gets nervous when he has to take a penalty, it's normal.
Should be the default response about this guy.
But the pen, holy shit. If you just smash the ball as hard as you can, it is a lottery indeed. I do not expect players to score every penalty but at least try to aim for the goal instead of using pure force without being able to tell yourself where the ball will be going to.
He's going to be so mentally shot for a while now, it might be tough for him to recover from this.
was it intentional? What would have been if Higuain didn't get this nasty back injury....
He never recovered his pace or agility since than and i remember arguing in this very forum that the decision to sell him was right because he won't recover what was his lethal weapon before which of course no one believed it . Higuain relied on shots from the outside his pace running off the shoulder of the last defender and agility .. all affected by a back injury .. he is not the same...
needless to say he always had this mental block.. which seems permanent he scored in the clasico in 2008 but never took as a starting point to overcome his big game record.. instead he went back to being invisible in all the clasico's ..same for the CL.. he had some chocking misses i can remember the Dortmund one & Lyon in 2009 ... although truth said.. in terms of game play he suits Messi with Argentina than Aguero who hangs around just for fun
