Not so sure about that. Our problem is less ability and more mentality in Europe at the moment. Ability in some key positions is lacking, but club needs some winners and mentally strong players to come through the ranks to handle the heightened intensity that CL KO games entail.
It's both. A high-level mentality usually comes from having proven ability at the top. It's near impossible for teenagers to have this kind of mentality by themselves. It's obtained in years of playing with high-class players in their prime. Hoping the likes of Pedri get that mentality by magic is dream-land.
Our best chance is they somehow develop on their own, even if slower. But fans demanding instant results are putting up a lot of pressure that is too much for them, at the current level. Likes of Pedri and Gavi would need a De Bruyne next to them for example. High-level players around them that would take some pressure off them.
I'm sorry but those players are not free. They cost hundreds of millions.
Even the likes of Iniesta and Xavi had top 5 Ballon d'Or players like Ronaldinho and Deco to take the burden off them, and that's at 22-23, not 18-19.
Pedri by example, poor guy, he's inflated to the heavens by desperate fans needing the next Iniesta right now.
