Kompany is the best defender in the premier league, and that's saying something. I'm sure you all know of the defending quality of the premier league, as Kompany sticks out like a sore thumb he's a special defender.

I'd be more interested in knowing each player's strengths and weaknesses, and where one scores over the other, from the folks here.

Kompany is much better than Hummels but chances of signing Kompany are zero.

Overall i said Hummels, but i sat at my computer for while after i posted the poll considering the two options.
- No doubt for me that Kompany is a better header of the ball (not that Hummels is bad)
- Both can pass, there's a reason Kompany is comfortable in DM as well, but Hummels' range and accuracy is just :worthy:
- Where Kompany solidifies a team, Hummels does that a thousand-fold, but to the back line only. In most teams, they bond naturally. In Man City, they need glue and Kompany is that. With Dortmund, I think we see Subotic who's positional sense is not to be compared with these two, Piszcek who loves to bomb forward and Schmelzer who's also loves to play the ball. In City, Lescott is an out and out tough CB, no nonsense, Richards/Zaba are very different - Zabaletta is much more conservative, whereas Kompany can bail Richards out of trouble. Clichy = beast.
- I reckon Hummels edges it in positioning. He's like Mario Gomez but in defence, always in the danger area and always capable of stopping it. Again, both world class and Kompany does it well too, just not quite as well.
- Communication: hard to tell, some is down to the coach (Jurgen>Mancini) and the partner (Subotic>Lescott), but I might give it to Kompany here.
- Tackling: both are rocks, i would say walls but that would be an insult to Puyi :p I'd say about even.
- Interceptions/reading of the game: Hummels. Countless times he stops a move out of no-where, Busquets does it, but he doesn't have to balance it with being perfectly positioned for CB (as much, i am very aware of the rotation between him and the backline).

If Luiz was in the poll, he would get my vote for sure!

You're from Belgium, you're obviously biased. But I respect your opinion no matter how wrong its :p
You're right, but have you seen him play for Belgium?
Because at times, he plays even more impressive there.
He'd suit Barcelona perfect, he's got al the recquired footballing skills and he's modest, but I also really like Hummels.

Nice analysis.
I'd like to add that they both look like very professional players on and off the pitch.
Kompany would be a great leader, for the team and for the younger players. He was always talented, but he wasn't ready mentally when he went to Hamburg. However, after a while he changed his mentallity and know he's a real leader. He looks after the young players (like Lukaku in the Belgian national team), guides them and takes them apart for an individual conversation when necessary.
Hummels also looks like a leader, but I don't know him well enough to really say that.
