There was going to be nothing at end of it and no option to improve books through renewal later in contract etc.

Gundogan signed his contract in 2019 and his best form came after that.

In that 2018/19 season he was in and out of team and started 21 league games getting 5 assists and 5 goals in all comps.

The contract he got at that point may not be as high as would think going by what he did in years after it.

I am sure when he was being linked with Barca it said he felt had been underpaid by City for what he did in those years also.
