Ivan Rakitić

Or given him less than 4 seasons. He has a contract until 2019 already. At the most, one more year. This board is pretty bad at this.

By giving him that length of contract and a raise it seems that they value him and viewed as starting player.

Could be a decent squad player going forward but to get Barca back to the midfield required needs more technical ability and more quick movement than Rakitic can give.

Might be wrong and next manager gets best out of him but feels unlikely.

Our buying of 'not-so-special' midfielders started from him.

People are gonna hang me and what not for this but he never was anything special to begin with. Nowhere near barca level. He was an above average midfielder and kroos etc were always a much much better option but the board went for him.

Thankfully he didn't turn out bad like most of the 'not-so-special' midfielders of recent probably because he realized how limited his capabilities are and he did his best to not complicate things and let it stay simple and made up by defending a lot and ultimately giving us much more than he was actually capable of. Not a terrible signing by any means in retrospect but we missed out on a lot of superior options and him doing well here led to the board and lucho never going for big names or trying to get proven players, but instead scouting and buying developing players who showed promise but were never proven. This always carried a big risk and it showed in our current signings.

I am not saying all of our signings needed to be proven players or big names but we made so many signings this time and not one proven player. Not to mention we overpaid by a lot on them.

We need to buy more proven players and currently with an aging iniesta, the midfield is in a dire need of a proven midfielder

He was instrumental in treble season and still very much useful.
If we could get a workhorse/creative player like Verratti to replace Rakitic.. by all means.

I am COMPLETELY okay with Rakitic staying with us, especially if the alternatives to play in our midfield are Gomes and Denis.

Imo, we should only buy players who can immediately make an impact. Dropping 30, 35m on players who are "prospects" like Gomes and Paco are always too risky. If we want to give a young player a chance we should always look to La Masia. Not only are they free for us to use but if we don't like them, someone else will, and we'll probably turn a profit somewhere if we don't just loan them into obscurity.

Maybe it is a some weird "price tag raising" before cashing him to ManUtd or some big spender like that?

Or suddenly Lucho will start him every game?

I like Rakitić as a player (I'm Croatian and he played well in Barça and, scored 1:0 in UCL final)... But 4 years? Maybe a bit too long.

4 years is a standard. We can have him for 2 more years and then sell for a decent price. Which would be impossible if he signed for 3.

So, we signed Raki for 4 more years, it seems that he will stay at last 1,5-2 more years.
Gomes and Denis are new guys and they will probably stay at least one more season.

So, it seems that Barto and a board have the opinion: "everything is fine with our midfield and our team, we just need a new coach to shake things up with these awesome midfielders."

If so, we will probably get only a RB this summer and a new coach.
We won't even try to start an overhaul in this summer.

This board is always at least 1-2 seasons too late in planning and seeing what is wrong with a team.

So, in the next season, we will have:
1. Iniesta
2. Rakitic
3. Gomes
4. Denis
5. Rafinha

Arda is questionable.
Roberto could be used as a 1st or 2nd RB again since we have enough of midfielders.

Not only that our midfield rooster will be average again, but we won't have room for a signing.
Plus, this means virtually no space for Alena or any other players (for example, Samper).

In this moment, I would rather try ANYTHING new (Alena, Samper etc).
They can't be any worse than current Gomes/Rakitic/Denis/Arda (and Rafinha of course, but he is La Masia kid).

The board is heading for a lose-lose scenario.
No new players, no minutes for La Masia kids.
Just keep trying with the same average midfield over and over and expecting that they will suddenly work again like in 2015.
