That selfish botched nutmeg attempt at the end while 3 on 3 against the defence in acres of space was a thing of beauty.

He is totally out of form and that won't improve since he won't be playing much this season. But you saw what Vidal did and how Roberto played. It's not like we have a fabulous choice of midfielders right now.

He is totally out of form ? Lol.

He’s the exact same shit player that he’s been since 2016-2017. He’s been out of form for the past 3 years I guess, despite being an undisputed, entitled, whiny, bitchass starter for that whole period. And the fact that Valverde asked him to stick Piqué’s ass so that the fraud could avoid as much as possible crowded areas, doesn’t change anything.

Now that we’re back at being an offensive team, he’s completely exposed even for people who don’t understand shit about football. So now his fanboys have a new excuse "he is out of form", at least no more "good game Rakitic" after the dude spent 90 minutes hiding from the ball.

Rakitic had one good year for Barca, the rest of the time he has been a massive fraud. And I’m totally serious.

Well that's your opinion and I absolutely don't agree with you and for the record neither do Valverde, Enrique or Setien since he is still playing even in his current form. This is by far his worst year and it's obvious he has declined but during the last year he has been crucified for that awful performance at Anfield more than anyone else while Alba was even worse in that game. On the other side Vidal was FUCKING awful yesterday and he is far from a good fit for Barca not to mention he was always a brainless player. I can't see that people are constantly writing anything similar in his thread?! VIdal caused us to concede because of his stupid mistake and after that he makes the exact same mistake but hey we won so it's irrelevant. On the other side Rakitic enters the game in 89th minute and he makes a stupid mistake when he should have passed the ball to Alba and the sky falls apart because of that?! A hypocrisy at it's best.

To think Lucho chose Rakitic over Kroos is mind boggling to this day. Sure in the treble season he was actually decent, helped us a good deal but he has never been that great. Ever since that season though, the gap between the German and the Croat has been massive, one establishing himself as one of the best midfielders of this geneartion while the other kept stealing a living and being a whiny bitch.

Can someone with real tactical knowledge (maybe a past coach or player even amateur level) tell me why he played so much under EV and now perhaps under Setien too?

I just don’t seem to understand. Is it his positioning? Chemistry with Messi? I’m asking this in a formal fashion

I am not the one you are seaking, but as far as Setien is concerned, it is obvious we simply lack personnel at this point in time. Arthur and Vidal are both in front of Rakitic in the pecking order right now. He is just above Puig.

About Valverde and Rakitic, a thesis should be made from a professional tactician to assess the issue.

I don't understand it either...
Probably the Messi factor or his relatively good far-shots, who knows.

When people think about Rakitic, they are skewed due to a current, bad version of Rakitic.

In younger days, he was a key player of Sevilla under Emery.
At Barca he was the most used player for 5 straight seasons in a row under Lucho and EV.
He is also a guy who played at a World cup final with Croatia and for years at an NT team, he was always playing for 90 minutes, while even Modric got tired and subbed from time to time.

So, again, for a moment forget a current, old and declined version of Rakitic.
During younger days his virtues were:
1. NEVER, absolutely NEVER injured and always available to play
2. somewhat versatile since he can play as a pivot, CM in a 433, CM in 442, CAM in some formations (for Sevilla and Croatia) or even a RM in EV's 442
3. in younger days he was always among top 2-3 players in every team regarding distance covered
4. he always had high numbers of interceptions and tackles for a midfielder
5. and in younger days, he was a way better scorer and used to make assists

So, in short: he was never a shiny, technical, eye catching players.
But he was a tireless midfielder, never injured, who was offering a nice All-round input in defending, covering and even in scoring and assisting.

Kinda master of none skill, but very good at everything.

Again, don't be blinded by a current Rakitic, who even for my standards, have way too many wtf moments lately.
If he played like he is playing today, he surely wouldn't have been a starter for years at Sevilla and Barcelona.

Even if you look at his goals for Barca from the last few years, you can see that he was somewhat faster, less scared, sharper in shots and passes than today.

He used to be a nice allrounder.
Today he is not an allrounder anymore since he is barely scoring, he is scared in creation and has bad passes and even in defense he is slower and weaker than before, due to age.

Rakitic in the first two seasons under Lucho was very similar to how Henderson is now. The difference is that both those teams had incredible attacks. When you have incredible attacks with a lot of individual quality, and superb link-up play, you can put in lucrative midfielders like Rakitic, Henderson, Milner, without worrying too much that they aren't creators or playmakers. Just have them releasing the ball as fast as possible to the attackers and you'll be fine.
