Nah they are down to both
To have a good defencee, players need to be skilled in defence then the system should make the most of their skills in defence.
You can blame the system all you want but if your players don't know how to tackle, are too afraid to tackle, are too weak to win a duel, you will always be in the same bad situation

They seemed to be able to defend well in 2014-15 and even for a large portion of 2015-16. This season the tactics were idiotic to say the least. Players don't just know to defend a season, and forget how to defend in the next one. It's the tactics, the motivation and the discipline that change. We were pretty shit at all three this season.

Yes but to tackle you have to be close to the ball, when our lines are so spread we are not. We defendede quite well in 2015. Yes, you can say Iniesta was younger but agaibst Juve we had Masc and Roberto in midfield. They are better than Iniesta in defending yet we were bypassed with ease. On the other hand RM does form a compact defense, even CR is in his own half. We need to do the same. Ney and Suarez MUST create a line with 2 midfielders, Busi just behind them clearing the space and connecting the lines and 4 defenders close. Than you create packed lines that can't be penatredet so easily. Then and only then we can talk about individual defendeing quaility. For example: if our defender is missing tackles, not reading the game, or our mid is losing all the duels, and so on...but if we play 3 vs 5 or 6 when defending then you can have 3 of the best defenders in the world and you'll be bypassed easily.

To tackle you have to be closer to the ball, then you have to know how to tackle.
Both things must be there.
You can't sign players who don't know how to tackle at all and then expect they will win defend well just by being closer to the ball

Pretty sure Iniesta defends way better than Roberto, I think he just does it so smoothly that it goes unnoticed every time

Totally disagree.

Iniesta has become a liability defensively as he cant get back quick enough or close down with any energy.

The amount if times midfielders just ran past him or away from him easily last season was scary.

Nothing new. I think he has offers from several clubs even if Nice president has denied that they received any official bid yet but I think he's still waiting for Barça to call him.

Maybe we should go after him, now that the Verratti case seems to fade away. He was one of the best performing players last season and he will not cost a fortune.

So, he should be primary option now for good price. Something like 45M would be enough I think.
