Hera a nice little radar chart I saw on Reddit comparing Xavi 10/11 and Seri 16/17. Pretty comparable with some major disadvantages regarding retaining possession/blocking.

Just because our transfer strategy has sucked doesnt mean we shouldnt aim to improve. We should focus on signing players younger than 25. Older than that should be the clear exception. Its extremely expensive to sign 27 year olds for 100m euros. Divide that transfer fee up with the number of years left at the highest level and it is really bad. The problem isnt the age or the nationality that we sign, its that we sign so much garbage.

Take last summer. I wanted Gabriel Jesus, Dembele, Sidibe, Lemar, Fabinho and Umtiti. The prices of these players have since skyrocketed. We decided to sign Paco, Gomes, Digne, Umtiti etc. Except Umtiti, these players hadnt shown nearly enough quality to warrant a Barca move. Only Umtiti has been a success.

Barca should offer you internship in their sporting/scouting department. Serious

Why would Nice sell him for only 25M? With clubs like P$G and Arsenal also interested I think price will be around 40M or more IF they decide do sell. Their decision will probably depend a lot of if they'll qualify for CL or not. It's good news that their opponent in last qualification round is Napoli who will be favourited but Nice are clearly also not without chances. So my guess is they might be willing to sell Seri in last week of August if they won't qualify for CL. If he's truly a Barça fan then he could prefer our offer over PSG (Nice might also be more willing to sell to us although I don't think they consider PSG as their title contender the same way as Monaco who rejected to sell them Fabinho and apparently also Mbappe) or Arsenal (not playing in CL could hurt their chances but they got Lacazette so who knows) if Nice will agree to sell. Question is if we are prepared to wait so long but given the fact there are not really a lot of other available options out there we might just do that. If Nice will eliminate Napoli and qualify for CL group stage then I don't think they'll sell Seri this summer as they will already get a lot of money from that.

No reason to be snarky. Its not difficult to actually see that players like Dembele, Thomas Lemar, Fabinho, G. Jesus, Umtiti etc would very likely be great signings and that Gomes, Paco, Vermaelen, Arda, Douglas and the rest would be bad for us.

A question to you, do you think we are even aware of Leon Goretzka being available for around 20m euros? We are said to want more physicality in the midfield. What is our management doing? Anyone with a brain can do a better job than what we've been doing lately.

Tbh Lucho probably carries fault for alot of last years signings as well. In fact Gomez was his pick, and most expensive as well.

I get you to some extent, but it work both ways.

Try to write on a paper 5-10 young players on whom you would break the bank today.
And then check where will those guys be in 2 years and whether they were worth the investment.

Now, you may reply: even if they won't make it, we can resell them.
But then, if you are trying all the time to find the next big thing, you are turning into Arsenal to some extent.

If you buy one Dembele this summer, that is ok.
But if you buy 5 Dembeles, your team won't win too much in the next 1-2 years.
And then, in 2 years, maybe those Dembele and Gabriel Jesus will start to play well.
Or we will figure out that they will never be as good as expected and then we'll buy 5 new Dembeles.
So, we will lose 2 years into waiting for the first 5 Dembeles. Then 2 out of them will make it and 3 will turn out to be average, and then we will buy 5 new Dembeles and wait again 2 years to see how will they develop.
That way, you have at least 4 years of waiting for better days.
By then, you will have 3-4 youngsters who will be world class (those Dembeles), but you will have 3-4-5 other starters who are now 32 and they have lost the best years on waiting for those Dembeles.
Now, you will again buy 5 new Dembeles instead of these 32 year old guys and you will again lose 2-4 years to see how will they develop.
Once when they will actually develop, those first Dembeles will already be here 8 years, and they wasted their whole career into waiting for some new youngsters to get into their prime.
So, by the time when you will actually develop a 2nd generation of youngsters, you will again have some starters aged 32 and you will need to play a lottery with new youngsters, plus the 1st generation of Dembeles will already be past their prime.

So, imo, in short, if you plan to play this waiting game with 2-3-4 new young gems each summer, unless if you will hit a jack pot, more or less you will always play a waiting game.
Aka, you will be the new Arsenal. They are playing a version of that shit over and over, waiting for a better future, when their "new youngsters" will finally be ready to rule the world.

So, yes, 22 year old has a better resell value than a 26 year old.
But you need to wait him longer and he has higher chances to fail.
This is why you need some balance:
1. some 30 years old players
2. some overpiad 26-28 years old players
3. some overpiad proven 24 years old guys
4. and 2 youngsters at max, whom you will wait, bought for cheaper

Imo, you can't play a perfect financial (resell value) game and in the same time have Messi and fight for short-term trophies like La liga and Champions league. It is hard to have the best of both worlds (perfect financial investment in young players and trophies).
Teams like Liverpool, Ajax, Porto, Roma, Napoli, Borussia can play that waiting game since they don't have a huge pressure on their shoulders to win ALL available trophies right here right now.

The players range from 19 to 24. Sidibe is 24, Fabinho is 23, Dembele is 20, Lemar is 21. Not simply "young gems". These are not 17 year olds who play in Serbia. There is no "waiting game".

We will always have 30 year olds in the squad, simply because our signings age. Ronaldo is 32 and he wasnt signed at 30. He was signed at 24. Same with Dani Alves.

That being said, I'm fine with us signing Seri for 30 or 40m euros, especially if he has a release clause at that fee. He does offer value in the market at that price.

Who cares? He costs 30+M only; cheap not marketable. No one cares (the sad truth we have reached nowadays in football management).

But seriously, I do hope we get him and an effective affordable LW for no more than 45M (around 75M combined). We need to keep our dignity and pride; fuck those money suckers, we can deal with them next year. We have a strong team to compete this year if we get us a good LW on a loan deal
