He is great as a centre back option, as he showed again tonight. I wouldn't play him an entire season as a starter though, Barça should aim for higher quality, but if he would be a few years younger he'd be the perfect squad member. Still is now though, just a pity that I don't see him lasting much longer after this season.

He is still a very good CB, not world class, but when focused excellent against any team (bar Madrid, Bayern) i would say!!!

I noticed that as well, once he gets going he's very fast. Excellent tonight. It's great to have our players back fit, only Leo now (Rafa aside as his problem is a long term one).

I said this before, Mathieu is not that slow actually. In the last couple of matches I noticed that he catches up on strikers that start running before him.

I think the thing with Mathieu was that he's slow when he has to change his direction suddenly. When someone owns him 1 vs 1 or smth like that, he's quite clumsy iirc. But following someone in the same direction is no problem. He could probably give Walcott a run for the money.

He was awesome last Season when Busi got injured, and when Masch had to play as a Cdm, so Mathieu had to play with Pique all the time.
That was in a key part of a season (La liga matches and knockout rounds of a CL), and the guy was a beast back then. The wall.
After 2-3 poor Months in this season (when he played a lot as a LB, where he is usually poor) and when the whole team suffered from a complacency, majority of fans "killed" him.
As a CB, I still have enormous faith in Mathieu, even against Madrid and Bayern.

Alba has much better acceleration, that's why. Mathieu has a higher top speed though. On the pitch Alba "looks" faster 90% of the time !
