He suffered a bad knee injury in training yesterday against a teammate which led him to retire.

He was once clocked at 34.25 km/h Not too shabby

edit: and that was at Barca in his later years. Wouldn't be surprised if he reached 36+ when he was playing LB at Valencia

He wasn't going to play much more anyway, maybe 1 year more, his knee injuries were already making it impossible for him to play half of the season. Still, in Barcelona he was very useful player, he wasn't spectacular but was decent both at Left Back and Centre Back and don't forget he scored in 2 very important league games in the year of the treble; one of them against Real Madrid(we won 2-1) the other vs Celta(we won 1-0, he scored at 72 minutes).
