I thought Lucho initially made a terrible substitution, but he proved me wrong. He really stepped up when needed. Put his body on the line on a few clearances. Great performance from Mathieu. Very good consolation for otherwise a very shitty season from him.

I don't think it's been a shitty season for him.

Sure at times he's been shitty, but he's been great as many times as bad, if not more. Inconsistent for sure, and he also gives good comedy value, but I think he's a valuable squad member for the next couple of years.

He's been thrown under the bus at times during the season by Lucho who played him at LB. He got absolutely no business playing there, and we already saw that in Lucho's first El Clasico which ended 3-1 to RM. At CB he is very, very solid. I remember just from this season when Vermaelen was having an absolute horror show away to Malaga and Lucho subbed him off for Mathieu. The game changed completely. Anyway, a LB back-up is probably one of our main priorities in the summer, so we have hopefully seen the last of Mathieu at LB.

Interesting stat since he joined us in 2014. He has played in every single final we gotten in to. CL,Copa x2,UEFA Super cup,and the Fifa Club WC. Mostly as a sub bar the UEFA Super Cup, but either way he does the job when he gets subbed in.
