I didn't mean to say that he is a bad defender. Its just that he spends more time in the opposition half than our half by significant margin. The standard wing backs usually stay more in the center line area and intercepts or tackles the opponent attackers. Alba is so fast that he can afford to be hanging around in opposition 3rd and still can come back to catch up with the opponent players to stop him creating a chance.

It adds a dimension to the attack though. I know it's risky but when the attack overloads on the left, Alves has all sorts of space to run into on the right. I'd hope within the next couple of years though that Montoya progresses even more as he seems to be (comparatively) more defensively reliable.

As long as Alves does his part of the job on the right (which he doesn't seem to be doing lately, to be honest), there's no problem in Alba playing the way he does.
