What a stupid fuckin idea.. you play home AND away so each team has on paper a slight advantage by playing at home... so which home game do you sacrifice?? What about the local kids who want to go watch their home team?

This decision is purely based on financial gain and nothing else, a bit like Qatar World Cup. And enough with this bullshit about expanding “soccer” to USA.. they have the MLS for that.

Given it's Tebas, probably it is. He seems like a guy driven by profit to his federation. Hence why he makes hostile comments towards PSG.

But as we were talking, there are loads of benefits that could potentially come out of that. For both sides. No need to get emotional over shit and bringing whataboutery to it. Kids running in Messi shirts in Atlanta also would love a chance to see him play.

Do you think NBA/NFL playing games in London does nothing to popularity of these sports in the UK? Americans want the same with football. They've been yearning to make MLS grow out of retirement league status. And they cannot do that without having investment boost. Would take them a century.

Any idea if NBA and NFL have widened their fanbase in the UK?

Any figures/data to support that?

TV ratings on British channels broadcasting the NFL gone up dramatically the last few years

Even people that don't care about the Sport sit down to watch the Super Bowl, but more and more people are watching Regular Season games now too.

I've also noticed its increasing popularity here in Norway, although a part of that is influencing my close circle to start watching it too :p

I know it's not everybody's cup of tea with all the breaks, but I like the chess/tactical aspect of it and find it entertaining.

Ahh, good to see. In general I welcome any efforts that broaden our fanbase.

But please, no game in the US during the crunch time.

Yes, but I think simply staging the Supercopa there with two legs would be better as most teams tend to plan their pre-season in the States now anyway. It would be official games with a trophy attached to it.

Depends. Over time it did naturally because of normal American-British population traffic. There are loads of East Asian students coming on exchange and over there basketball is probably one of the biggest major sport after cricket and football, depending which country you talk about.
As a result of games in London? Who knows. Here, a random decent looking article making a lot of good points about London becoming a hub for Europe-wide fans of NBA/NFL that do not want to have to travel across the Atlantic to see them - http://www.espn.co.uk/nba/story/_/i...ich-american-sports-league-does-london-better
But there are multiple other American-born sport/performance things that spread here. Wrestling for instance has become massive with WWE developing the UK division, which otherwise was one of these fringe places that produced talented athletes but was never a major market. Could make a football comparison for the phenomenon to Bundesliga perhaps, dunno if entirely correct, but closest thing to it...

Someone brought it up earlier in the thread though: here there is no culture of franchise ownership like there is with NBA/NFL teams. That's what the difference is. Point stands however - America want football to get big there. MLS growth is good for them. Parents prefer their kids to play football rather than American football, because of growing concerns on concussions. There is a shift.

People need to get rid of this primitive "GET YOUR GRUBBY YANKEE PAWS OFF OUR SPORT" approach. Playing a game in America would help them grow the league by bringing more attention to the sport. It would help build relationships with La Liga.

And the best way would be to give them Spanish Supercup rather than a random league game. What Tebas has pushed is not ideal in execution, but it's a good idea.

The American System when it comes to Sports trying to professionalize it through their college system or the NCAA means that football will never become a major sport there. It's way too expensive with less chances of succeeding and earning big money. Most of the NFL and NBA players come from poor homes and for many of them these sports are not only an escape from the poor conditions and areas they live in, but also a chance of getting their parents and families out of those areas and get rich and live the life they dreamed of.

Football will never get there in the US unless they revamp their system.

Just to play the sport at a youth level in academies there's a too big cost attached to it that most of these people either cannot afford or don't find attractive enough. No reward into it.

Cricket is only popular in South Asia, not in East Asia. In East Asia basketball is indeed very popular, especially in CJK. South Korea and Japan do love baseball though.

Really? I know the talk of concussion in American football is pervasive, but has there really been a shift from American football to football/soccer in the US? I don't really see any evidence of that. American football remains hugely popular and football/soccer remains more or less a fringe/women's/pre-teen sport. It is not where the money is. Plus, even if the interest in American football wanes, there are still other more popular sports such as basketball, baseball and hockey for American kids to play, ahead of football/soccer.
