The president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation, Luis Rubiales, gave an extensive interview to the program 'El Larguero' of Cadena SER which, among many other things, advocated a change in the format of the current team competition or by a reduction of teams in the First Division.
Rubiales stated that ?we have a 38-game league and it can only be done in two ways: either the teams decrease or the format changes. If you decrease the teams, the clubs will not want to. So you have to look for a different format, with a 33-day competition in which there may even be more than two Classics. We can sit down with LaLiga to talk about dreams that Tebas has about neutral fields without harming the fans so that they have their game at home and away. Certain matches can be played in neutral fields. As the most modest hold on to the league of 20 with the 38-day format, they will play a pulse that can be won or lost. Either the leagues reduce the teams or they change the format and that is something that will happen in the next two or four years and if they want to have a pulse there will be four, six or eight clubs that are unchecked. We have to reach an intermediate point, which is what UEFA is proposing. We are going to a format in which the greats generate more box office ?.
I wouldn't be totally opposite to reduce the number of league games but I have no idea how this would work. Nor would the clubs agree to that as they would lose money by playing less games.
