If we're speculating I'd say the opposite. + club refrains from surgeries and been reported they treated Ramos with injections ahead of Bilbao game last month. Been same way for years under 2 different fitness coaches.

The top sides in Spain have declined a fair bit, that much is obvious, but one would expect more competition domestically from the mid-table sides than currently, considering todays RM/Barca are nothing special.

La Liga never had much quality midtable. Places 6 to 12 it's probably no better than Serie A. The league was kept on no1 spot by monster sides by Barca, Madrid, and partly Atletico in recent history. When these teams drop off, so does the league. There's no hope from the likes of Villareal, Bilbao, they don't have the power to rise and take advantage of the top teams dropping their level.

As worse as Barca and Madrid are, they are almost guaranteed top 4.
