So you cant support a team that is based in another country? Your argument is so full of shit... That means that the biggest football clubs in the world have like 2-3 mil. real fans and the others are bandwagoners.

Well you can but you so look a bit silly and will never have the real love for the team locals experience.

Considering the shitty level of the football in my country (i'd wager its not any different in Cyprus too) you just cant support such piece of shit. Yes I have a team I like and support but nothing remotely close to Barca.

I think everyone should support their local side but then I live in a Country (lets say UK) where football is extremely popular so I do sympathize.

If I didn't support Swansea I'd support Cardiff.

Dude you are from Cyprus and support Barcelona, the most successful club team in the world right now, the true definition of a glory supporter.

People from outside the major Europeans nations are bound to support one of the major European clubs. The vast majority here in Cyprus support one of the English teams.

Most go for either Liverpool or Man United. Cypriots who emigrated to England a few decades back, support either Arsenal or Spurs (because most of them live in North London)
Those who are better "educated" in football, tend to support some of the continental sides, but they are quite few in relative terms. They go for either AC Milan, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid or Barca.

If I elaborate on the criteria by which they make these choices you will die of laughter, because you do not know anything about Cypriot society (not that there is the slightest reason that you should)

Anyway, back to our point, by your logic, all foreign supporters are gloryhunters. If that is what you have in mind, then so be it. It is just a matter of definition. Of course everyone has his local club, but when it comes to world-class football, as a football fan, you are bound to choose a major European side. I can't see what is so wrong with that?

If you are a tennis fan, are you not allowed to support Federer unless you are Swiss? What kind of logic is that?

You support a minor side by British standards. But from what I realize from your posts, you tend to support the English teams when it comes to European competition. And you quite possibly have some preference when it comes to domestic football in England. But I don't really care in accusing you for that.

In fact, the intention of the major European clubs, is precisely not to be local, and seek to create fans everywhere in the world. The EPL would have been less than half of what it is without international interest. So, be careful what you wish for.

My local team in Cyprus are the exact opposite of Barca. They literally can't string more than 3 passes together, and can't control the ball for shit.

They are only good, Walcott-like, when there is space.

My favorite Bulgarian club are PFC Levski Sofia, they used to be good back in the early 2000s' but now they are total shit, just a pain to watch. They finish in the top 3 every year but my eyes bleed every time I see them play. If I had to point out a strong side of their play it would be their passing. But its probably even worse than all the teams on the bottom of every league. They did make it to the groups in 2006-07 but then they faced Barca, Chelsea and Werder. Needless to say they got bottom spot with 6 losses and only with a goal difference 1/17. When they played Barca I was for barca, im not ashamed to admit i have blaugrana in my blood and i would support Barca even if they play against BG's NT.

Hey, a Bulgarian fella supporting Levski and Barcelona!

I can understand both points.
Its funny how some of the foreign/international fans are even more passionate and more aggressive than the local fans, probably it is due to their social conditions. Football turned out to be business and a social vent.
Our clubs do not offer us good product and that's why we turn to other leagues for better stuff. The laws of the market. English, Spanish, Italian clubs can only benefit from it.
Our market is going down, the West is flourishing, everybody is happy.
In the end football is just another stupid game for the masses
But e love it :)

If my local club (Omonia Nicosia) could ever get a result against Barca, I would seriously contemplate suicide.

Which for the most part is true, surely? If Barcelona won nothing do you think it would still have massive worldwide support?

Well, nope of course. If Valencia offered the football that Barca produce, then I can guess they would have been the team with the massive worldwide support.
On the other I usually cheer for the lesser/weaker team, depends on the personality too :)

Barcelona always had its fair share of supporters thanks to players like Cruyff, Maradona, Laudrup, Figo, Ronaldo, Rivaldo etc. It wasn't comparable with today's fan base, but it's not like the english press says that we began to exist in 2006.

From what I understand he meant "what if Barcelona had never won anything", would have they enjoyed such popularity? Of course no, let's not fool ourselves. The international fans are basically glory-hunters, but that's because they identify themselves with the big clubs winning trophies. We, the international fans, have two choices - give up from football or go and enjoy the success/beauty of the game.

Damn what a load of philosophical shit I wrote, I must be bored

I never understood this 'Support your local team' crap. I was born in Highbury, North London (Greatest place on earth BTW :D) but I don't feel like I'm more of an Arsenal supporter than someone who lives in, lets say, America.

If you have love in your heart for a team, doesn't matter if you live on the moon, if you love them, then you are a real supporter.
