surely exercising that option could have been kept private the same way he secretly told barto he wanted to leave?

nah, brah. they're just paupers that think they're fighting for the greater good aka wanting the club to succeed. which is not bad when you think of it, but they like to hate on messi for various reasons and it's easier to throw the blame on him than look at the bigger picture.
